I would consider myself as a spiritual being and I am pretty open with all types of spiritual beliefs and practices. Even though I grow up praising the “Lawd”….. have mercy I find that I am very liberal in my thinking of allowing people to be themselves. Needless to say I sometimes think that everyone thinks like me. To my surprise I ended up in a heated debate with a male friend of mines about sex. His position was that it is wrong to have casual sex and that sex was meant to be between and husband and wife. And my response was “Oh Really”, it was ironic to me that he said that considering that we had just engaged in a causal act of sex.

With a puzzled look on my face I asked him why he felt that way and if he felt so strongly about it; why did he continue to have casual sex with me. Given his background, his was in seminary to be minister in a faith that I am not going to name. In my opinion he had “moral” value but I had always thought that he considered sex to be a natural and healthy. It was a spiritual expression of two souls mingling. That it was a beautiful thing especially when it was “good”. The closest that two people could physically be together other than a pregnancy. Which brings me to the fact that some type of sexual act had to take place in order for us to even show up in this world. (Yes I mean artificially insemination too). Not his views at all. (I see why they say never assume) He felt that what we shared on a number of occasions was a vice that he must work on.

He felt it was a “sin” to engage in premarital sex and that he always left with an overwhelming feeling of guilt whenever he engaged with me. We remained friends after this conversation but the sexual encounters stopped. I did not want to contribute to the paradigm that sex was number one wrong or number two his damnation. What’s your opinion could you be both spiritual and sexual?
