    sexual harrassment on the net::: the pen is mightier than the sword

    it is important as hosts and social networkers that we maintain an awareness that our shows and our friendlists provide a connection to people that trust us for our skills, and the environment that we provide. the spiritual category is an easy bet for those who are looking for an in and our shows and communications on facebook an twitter reveal trends of individuals, what they watch listen to and even their schedule.

    as hosts i do think we have a reasonable responsibility to maintain as safe an environment as possible, i know for myself that i have minors that come to my shows and they expose themselves by a click to potential intimidation sexual and otherwise.

    I am writing this blog because a sexual predator (legally harasser) is among us and even though it is fairly well known to a number of hosts this persons behaviour has not been checked, for all that their is the potential to misuse or enter into maligning behaviours it is equally clear that some cases are beyond doubt due to the sheer number of victims. in this case a number known personally to myself.

    there have been no warnings given, by these hosts to other hosts and in effect they allow this person free access to their clients, their chat room visitors and on fb and ning, their friends and family. awareness is the single best tool and if possible once the real name is known (in this case it is) there is much that can be done, so lets be clear here, it is against the law to sexually harass someone on the net. i have below put some tips and tricks to help you if you are suspicious of someone and also some behaviours that will help you make good choices and deny access, it is not only children who let people into their live that they shouldn't. it takes no more effort to become a familar and so comfortable figure on a chat basis, so i will start with the obvious:::

    YOU DO NOT KNOW ANYONE IN THE CHAT IF YOU HAVE NOT MET THEM IN PERSON

    the assumption that you know someone is completely false, a predator is adept at presenting him or herself in a way to gain your confidence and trust. having watched and listened to you in chats and following you around on fb and myspace they can gain a very good insight into who you are. so be careful and if unsure dont let them have private access to you, if in doubt

    secondly to remain active in a particular group of people it requires that the victims say nothing so speak up to someone you trust,,,

    GET HELP AND ADVICE

    it is common for a predator to gain your confidence and then get quite insistent about calling your privately
    if you are unsure do not give them access to your skype yahoo or msn, never ever give your address or phone number including your cell.

    there are some great tools for recording calls, if you are talking to a stranger on your comp ensure you have a recording facility set up and runnng. let them know you are recording, if sexually explicit and aggressive or threatening

    HANG UP IMMEDIATELY, REPORT THE CRIME, AND SAVE THE RECORDING SO YOU CAN GIVE IT TO THE AUTHORITIES

    behaviours to watch out for"

    someone trying to gain access to your personal information and often fairly insistent, they may present themselves as powerful they are not. they are dishonest and cunning that is all. if you are uncomfortable in any way, discontinue contact and if you are just not sure ASK someone else what they think before you get into trouble.

    any indication that your interactions need to be secret and or private..often seeking live phone and webcam access. really be careful here you are letting people into your home space, would you let a stranger in your door at night? Giving access can and has meant months of harrassment by email, and a reluctance to interact in certain rooms on btr.

    i am aware that this is not physical damage being done, but it is intimidating and for some it is scary. it can do serious damage also hosts need to be aware that victims will not go to a room where the predator is and their show actual can reveal an inner need to the predator that could not be gained otherwise through readings of a person and bring forward their vulnarabilities.

    you may take this lightly or you may not,, however as adults and hosts i do beleive we have a reasonable duty of care and where it is bought to our attention to take no action is irresponsible. i do not wish this to look like a lecture but more a heads up and awareness exercise as the spiritual forum is specifically being targetted.
