The Empty Nesters

Human Nature

The Empty Nesters truly appreciate the many benefits associated with life in Southern California. With voluminous amounts of snowfall throughout most of the country, we get to wake up in mid February to sunny, 80 degree days. Another major perk to life in So Cal is our proximity to all things show business; many cities are known for being “company towns.” It just so happens that where we live, the industry is TV and movie studios.

We recently went on a field trip 90 miles up the coast to gorgeous Santa Barbara, home of a major university, charming downtown, well respected wineries, and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. We had the opportunity to sit down and talk with filmmaker Larry Nimmer, whose documentary, “Michael Jackson: The Untold Story of Neverland” had its world premiere at the festival.

Nimmer was hired by Michael Jackson’s defense team in 2005 to document events at Jackson’s home in rebuttal to the poor quality tape shot by the Sheriff’s department at Neverland during his arrest in 2003. Nimmer had unprecedented access to the estate and the film features footage presented in court as well as unseen trial footage of Jackson’s accusers, outtakes from the Martin Bashir documentary, “Living with Michael Jackson,” and classic Jackson career highlights.

The filmmaker began his journey of the Beverly Hills type home in a Disneyland setting without a preconceived opinion of guilt or innocence. During filming, he found no drugs, adult  materials, or secret rooms. In fact, Michael had a varied collection of over 10,000 books, none of which could be considered adult material. Nimmer met Michael once, briefly, and found him to be self effacing and surprisingly tall. If one thing about his physical appearance was unnerving, it was the much talked about cosmetically altered nose.

There is no doubt that talented celebrities are often out of touch with “normal” living and Michael was particularly eccentric. Did this lead to the compromising situations he found himself in? While Nimmer’s goal is to help viewers make up their own minds about guilt or innocence, it is clear he grew to believe that Jackson had been set up by the accusers in both 2003 and 1993; if Jackson was guilty of anything, it was childlike naiveté.

If you are a Jackson fan or are simply fascinated by the facts in this case, this is the movie to see. Nimmer worked so hard to put this together and firmly believes in his project. Check out www.nimmer.net for more information about the film.
