I am looking forward to tuning in to each of your shows next week...dealing with the effects of capitalism in all its forms.

Elevate The Soul

We Elevate The Soul (WETS) is directed towards preparing the village for transformative and sustainable change. We believe that our true work is to focus inwardly and encourage others to consider and work through the care of their self through soulfulness and self-knowledge, awareness of their gifts, the impacts of their wounds and fears, the role of illusion, distraction and ignorance. If change is to really take root and provide for additional justice against all forms of oppression we believe that we can find peace in hearing from other’s experiences and spending our own personal time in solitude and reflection. Our lives resemble a Mobius Strip (reflecting both the inner self and the public self intertwined) and often times the Ego wants to control. WETS is also about a soul journey and the “whole person” exploring topics and mental energy fields that have been created that contribute to our segmented lives and explains why we are where we are on many different levels. WETS also want to be able to insight diversity and opinions that may not be communicated through our normal and/or regular commercial media channels. Topics will include issues related to forms of oppression, politics, the soul and inner journeys, environment, education and more. Join us on the journey of self-exploration as we hold space to consciously listen to our own inner voices and hear from those voices as they navigate the material realm. As Earth, Wind and Fire say in one of their songs; "Talking to yourself is fine...it shows you where the trouble lies." Peace, Blessings and stay tuned.

Show Notes

Building Cultural Capital will increase the likelihood and help to ensure that we better understand and mobilize all assets (financial, human, environmental, social, etc.). If the only asset you value is financial, you are already broke. Understand the culture that has been developed that tears at your soul and forces the majority to suffer oppression.

Over the past few weeks we have touched on the significance of building capital (resources) and the understanding that the notion of capital (resources/value) must exceed the limited definition of only relating to financial capital. We began with a discussion on capitalism, WIIFM – What’s In It For Me, spiritual, cultural and financial capital. This week’s show begins the conversation about the significance of human capital. I’ve heard it stated that more than 60% of the people are working jobs that are not a fit for them or jobs in which they dislike. While time-life is still consumed, and in a day and age where the average worker, once they begin their career track, is projected to change careers more than five times over the course of his or her working life, in an increasingly competitive marketplace where employers are fighting over an ever-decreasing workforce, and in an economic environment of mass lay-offs, downsizing, organizational mergers, and outsourcing—where employees seemingly have little reason to feel a sense of security in their job, it is imperative to take a look at human capital. Simply stated, human capital means people. The more experience, their knowledge base will increase, as will their endowment of human capital. Education, training, and health are the most important investments in human capital. That is because they raise earnings, improve health, or add to a person’s good habits over much of his lifetime. One aim is to keep more of us out of the industrialized prison complex system that will make use of your labor as their human capital. What is necessary? What skills and attitudes are important? How will we invest in ourselves and how can it be linked internally to our calling? Have we thought of our purpose, passion, gifts, and talents and how they might fit our calling. What will we invoke? Join my co-host, Ty Grey-EL and me as we explore some of the work that is needed and the work of the Empowerment Center.

Is It Apathy – Selfishness, Complacency or Ubiquitous Disparity? or...Is Freedom Just Another Word?

Our goal is not to tell you what to believe or what to do. We simply think that a better quality of knowing produces a better quality of me and you. We have had the honor and privilege over the past 22 shows of conveying and communicating from inside out. We began with the soul and have attempted to focus on family, environment, creativity, literacy, health, critical thinking, youth, culture, volunteerism, community sustainability, racism, capitalism, rap and others and come back to where we began. What are our next steps? How do we continue to support those who do care for equity, justice, and quality of life? How do we convey to those who sit on the couch and simply want to complain without seeing the impact on the whole? Our show this week addresses the question: why the apathy, disengagement, lacks of courage and excitement to bring change. If a person wants to become involved through charity, volunteering or activism, what are the steps? Is there a formula for change and how do you encourage others to become actively involved in their own survival. How does one become a better activist? One of our guests tonight will be the folk at TIA’s Way as we highlight their progress and a major upcoming event. Their choice was to get off of the couch and into the community educating as many as they can on the number of women who will die this year as a result of cervical cancer. Let us know if you would like to join us at the Cervical Cancer Walk at Ft. Dupont Park in Washington, DC. Join us as we hope to hear your thoughts and insights on the air. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYjBqJJD_wM

Health Care Debate Or Is It Health Care Negate?

Folk, you don't want to armchair this one! The health industry and it's $500 Billion profits have vested interest in keeping you confused causing fear and many people missing the point as the public is held hostage. It has been reported that over the last 2 years that 1 in 3 did not have health insurance. They feared giving up their homes or their children's education. 14,000 Americans are losing health care benefits a month. Eliminate waste, bring competition into the system, health care reform, security, stability and innuendo that you might be fined if you don't buy health care. They say that agreement has been reached on over 80% of the bill. Oh, don't forget about pre-existing conditions (profit, capitalism, profit, social, economic and political disintegration, prescription costs, profit, alleged death squads or the notion, and profit). We are paying more attention to kidnappings, movie stars, reality t.v., the Beatles, new IPods coming out, while unemployment continues to rise, homes are lost and we operate under the illusion of promoting domestic tranquility. Hello, join us and weigh in. The implications of H1N1 aka Swine Flu will place even more demands on a hurt and broken system. Hurt and broken because of the outrageous number of Americans living in what was once the richest country on the earth, cannot take care of ALL of its citizens when they need it. We will pay for this on the front or the back end. Please know, regardless of how you vote, illness and disease don't stop at dividing lines between red and blue states. Rick Tingling-Clemmons, Washington, DC ANC member, educator and activist will join us. We hope that brother Ty Gray-EL and many of you will weigh in. NOW IS THE TIME. GET INVOLVED. Oh, paste and check this out Robert Reich: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/video/video.php?v=160544446109&ref=nf

Skipp Coon On Air: RAP - Rhythm And Poetry-Creative Expression and Art

Dr. Christopher Johnson writes: "The messages in Hip Hop, and all forms of popular music existing within the America project can expect to be affected and for the most part controlled by corporate machinery. In fact, it is the will of the corporation beyond the innovation of the artist that must dominate the relationship in order for that relationship to exist at all." See Voxunion.com. Join us as we talk about the message and the medium to spread consciousness, pride and self-love. FEATURED GUEST: SKIPP COON has been influenced by the likes of none other than poet/musician/author, Gil Scott-Heron. Skipp's music is a reflection of the Black experience in America; and a continuation of Black music, meant to uplift the Black community. The message that Skipp conveys is aimed toward Black people having more love for themselves. Society can change only if we change it. Check Mr. Coon Out - Upcoming Mixtape Release - "There Will Be No Sophomore Slump" Skipp and his DJ/Producer, Mr. Nick's sophomore release "Freedom Summer". 8/30/09, Dallas, TX, Performing for the RBG Block Party; 9/3/09, New Orleans, Mr. Coon and Mr. Nick Opening for Kidz in the Hall and The Knux at Howlin' Wolf; 9/10/09, Baton Rouge, Opening for Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother; 9/11/09, New Orleans, LA, Opening for Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother Emilio agrees and further states, "in order to change society we must change the systems that govern society and in order to change the systems that govern society we must change the people who create the systems. Change begins with self. The music is simply another medium to facilitate that change - for edification and building or to belittle and destroy." Rhythm And Poetry (R.A.P.) as an art form can bring clear messages of consciousness and insight into the pride of the individual. Join Us.
