Elevate The Soul

We Elevate The Soul (WETS) is directed towards preparing the village for transformative and sustainable change. We believe that our true work is to focus inwardly and encourage others to consider and work through the care of their self through soulfulness and self-knowledge, awareness of their gifts, the impacts of their wounds and fears, the role of illusion, distraction and ignorance. If change is to really take root and provide for additional justice against all forms of oppression we believe that we can find peace in hearing from other’s experiences and spending our own personal time in solitude and reflection. Our lives resemble a Mobius Strip (reflecting both the inner self and the public self intertwined) and often times the Ego wants to control. WETS is also about a soul journey and the “whole person” exploring topics and mental energy fields that have been created that contribute to our segmented lives and explains why we are where we are on many different levels. WETS also want to be able to insight diversity and opinions that may not be communicated through our normal and/or regular commercial media channels. Topics will include issues related to forms of oppression, politics, the soul and inner journeys, environment, education and more. Join us on the journey of self-exploration as we hold space to consciously listen to our own inner voices and hear from those voices as they navigate the material realm. As Earth, Wind and Fire say in one of their songs; "Talking to yourself is fine...it shows you where the trouble lies." Peace, Blessings and stay tuned.

Show Notes

Building Cultural Capital will increase the likelihood and help to ensure that we better understand and mobilize all assets (financial, human, environmental, social, etc.). If the only asset you value is financial, you are already broke. Understand the culture that has been developed that tears at your soul and forces the majority to suffer oppression.

VISTA: Rebuilding Community - Compassion & Service

WETS aired its first show some 13 episodes ago. Originally our intent was to focus on the inner work that needs to be done to fully appreciate transformative change in today and tomorrow’s society. We continue to affirm the necessary ingredients to sustaining what we do to include: Courage – Knowing Where You Stand (for Anti-Oppression and your decision to give back) - Compassion - Knowing What You Stand For (Justice and equity and the desire to serve those who need it) – Connection – Knowing Who Stands With You (your network, mentors, social capital). We have continued to evolve based upon listeners and comments from our friends network to focus on not only two sides of the coin but the band around it. Tonight’s show features the voices of several concerned, committed and compassionate people who decided to forgo their jobs to demonstrate how individual citizens can make a difference. Listen to the comments from VISTAs (Volunteers In Service To America) as they describe what they do, their motivations, anticipated outcomes, and learn more about how you can become involved in the greater good of building capacity and helping organizations and communities sustain their work. Featured guests include: Mandy, Phogenia, Bob, Nathan, Michelle, John, Alex, and others as well as brief clips from Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Michelle Obama as she announces the Summer of Service. The first 45 minutes included pre-recorded interviews and we will open the microphones for comments and call-ins. Join us and share your voice. Relevant links are provided in the sidebars of this newsletter.

Cervical Cancer- The Tia Edwards Story

There are entirely too many women dying needlessly each year in the United States. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second-most-common type of cancer that strikes women - behind only breast cancer. In the United States, cervical cancer is the 14th most common cause of new cancers diagnosed among women every year. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2007, about 11,150 women in the United States developed cervical cancer and about 3,700 died from it. That lower occurrence of cervical cancer in the United States is largely thanks to the Pap test, which has helped decrease the number of American women with cervical cancer by about 75 percent in the past 50 years. Are there specific risk factors associated? How long does it take for cervical cancer to develop? What are the symptoms? How is cervical cancer diagnosed? How is it treated? What is the chance of recovery? Can cervical cancer be prevented? Mother Ruth and Best Friend Priscilla Stand Together (Tia's Way) To Educate & Motivate The organization's, (Tia's Way) mission is to educate young women and ensure them, their families and friend that Tia's Way is a place they can come to get information about cervical cancer awareness and prevention. Knowledge is power! We will go directly to the people to spread our message. We will hand out flyers to those who do not have internet access and go to boys and girls clubs in low income neighborhoods to make sure no women is left behind. We'll do this Tia's Way. Tia's cancer journey maybe over but what she wanted for everyone is early detection so you may live.

Youth Improve the Quality of Their Lives As They Improve The Quality of Life In Their Community

Statistical data indicates that 58 million people in the United States are overweight, 40 million obese, and another 3 million who are considered morbidly obese. The claim is that childhood obesity is running out of control. Some data indicates that among children ages 2-19, 23.4 million are overweight and obese. Nearly 20% of 4-year-olds across the country are clinically obese. For non-Hispanic blacks this number soars to 30.8% for males and 39.2% for females. Research further indicates that the youths' weight could be attributed to poor lifestyle choices by parents or lack of physical activity. In any event, being overweight and obese leads to a number of adult illnesses that will need to be addressed.  Overweight and obese children are at high risk for heart disease, stroke, asthma, diabetes and certain types of cancer. Statistics further indicate that our nation's obesity epidemic is costing the country more than $117 billion per year in direct medical costs and direct costs related to reduced productivity and absenteeism. Bottom line, if we don't reverse these trends, we're in danger or raising the first generation of American children who will liver sicker and die younger than the generation before them. FEATURED GUESTS: The Winston County Self Help Cooperative Youth Group organized in 2003 with a goal reconnecting to the natural resources. Initially, they focused their energies on structuring an organization to transfer a positive community image of providing career guidance in the natural resources. They chartered a course of action to reconnect our youth with Mother Earth’s natural resources and strengthen families’ relationships by working together as a unit on various projects including organizing Arbor Day Activities, forestry projects, kids in the kitchen, and planting the youth garden. The youth expanded in 2004 with 25 young people making a difference in Winston County. The youth are involved in various activities connecting with the natural r
