  Racism is not a word that most people want to discuss because they may be unaware of its existence, while others are having personal experiences or trauma and yet others are preoccupied and cannot see beyond racial constructs. This is all of our work and the dialogue cannot stop at one presidential panel or one awareness course. Whites Overcoming Racism through Knowledge (A Facebook Group) states - “White people who recognize that building a racially inclusive and equal society is our WORK to accomplish, that we cannot do this through talk alone, and that white people cannot merely be "allies" in the fight to end racism, we must also take up leadership.” What is happening in DC in response to the allegations of racism among D.C.   The Power of Story - Promoting Critical Thinking and Literacy

  Heard a good story lately? That is a common question verbalized among many of us. Everyone loves a good story. Educator Vivian Gussey Paley pointed out, "story is the essential culture builder in any society or group or classroom...it is the way our minds work." Paraphrasing Joseph Campbell, "you are doomed to become what you cannot imagine." Virtually all-traditional stories deal with conflict in one form or another. Whether they are between nations, cultures, friends, siblings, parents & children or others, the stories contain deep truths about the need to resolve conflict in constructive, nonviolent ways. We talk about it taking a village to raise a child but what happens when the village loses its imagination? What happens when its' only source of information is coming through the bought and paid for media spinning it Rapunzel spinning straw into gold. We realize that basketball will be available for summer youth while jobs will be challenging to find. Every young person does not play afternoon or midnight basketball, is not interested in boxing, and do want something better to do than simply hang out on the street. How can we use the power of story to open the imagination of our folk? Creation does not begin with Facebook nor does it end in MySpace. What about our artists, painters, writers, chess players, debaters, cyclists, gardeners, cooks, musicians, those with environmental pursuits, and others? How do we spark their imagination?   Volunteering: An Ethic of Service (Courage, Compassion & Connection)

  As Alexis de Tocqueville observed more than 170 years ago, a defining characteristic of the American people is their commitment to service. Today, the ethic remains strong, as across our nation Americans of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are donating their time and talents to schools, churches, hospitals, and local nonprofits in an effort to improve their communities and serve a purpose greater than themselves. They are beautifying schools and neighborhoods, building homes, cleaning up after disasters, mentoring students, donating professional services, coaching youth sports teams, holding benefit fundraisers, and much, much more. These actions are critically important because volunteering today is a necessary aspect of meeting many of the needs facing our nation. The desire to serve extends across generations and in every part of our country. Since the Corporation’s inception: o More than 1 billion volunteer service hours have been generated by Senior Corps volunteers; o More than 400,000 individuals have served through AmeriCorps o And, more than 1 million high school students participate annually in service-learning initiatives funded by Learn and Serve America Our Guest: Derek Douglas is a long term volunteer in his community of Jellico, TN. Beginning as a fellow sponsored by Highlander Center, Douglas has served with a number of groups in the Appalachian region focusing on land use, conservation and social justice. He is currently an Office of Surface Mining VISTA with the Appalachian Coal Country Watershed Team. He has been working to help recognize more diversity in the watershed protection field and in his home town of Jellico. Whether it is meeting at Indian Mt. State Part to help plan a memorial service to lost classmates, serving at the Left Fork of Middle Creek watershed project, or facilitating educational and cultural programs on Martin Luther King Day; I have been impressed with Mr. Derek Douglas since we first met last yea

  Taking It To Da Streets

  Re-Broadcast from 6 p.m. Scheduled show... Technical challenges from 37,000 feet. Listening to the spin doctors on network news describe their thoughts and feelings about our President's first 100 days was a little disturbing. I thought, why not get a relative sample from folk across the country. I started in Washington, DC, Laurel, Md, Baltimore, Chicago, San Francisco and ending in Monterey, CA asking: If you had to give a grade to President Obama, what would it be and why?
