I am looking forward to tuning in to each of your shows next week...dealing with the effects of capitalism in all its forms.

Elevate The Soul

We Elevate The Soul (WETS) is directed towards preparing the village for transformative and sustainable change. We believe that our true work is to focus inwardly and encourage others to consider and work through the care of their self through soulfulness and self-knowledge, awareness of their gifts, the impacts of their wounds and fears, the role of illusion, distraction and ignorance. If change is to really take root and provide for additional justice against all forms of oppression we believe that we can find peace in hearing from other’s experiences and spending our own personal time in solitude and reflection. Our lives resemble a Mobius Strip (reflecting both the inner self and the public self intertwined) and often times the Ego wants to control. WETS is also about a soul journey and the “whole person” exploring topics and mental energy fields that have been created that contribute to our segmented lives and explains why we are where we are on many different levels. WETS also want to be able to insight diversity and opinions that may not be communicated through our normal and/or regular commercial media channels. Topics will include issues related to forms of oppression, politics, the soul and inner journeys, environment, education and more. Join us on the journey of self-exploration as we hold space to consciously listen to our own inner voices and hear from those voices as they navigate the material realm. As Earth, Wind and Fire say in one of their songs; "Talking to yourself is fine...it shows you where the trouble lies." Peace, Blessings and stay tuned.

Show Notes

Building Cultural Capital will increase the likelihood and help to ensure that we better understand and mobilize all assets (financial, human, environmental, social, etc.). If the only asset you value is financial, you are already broke. Understand the culture that has been developed that tears at your soul and forces the majority to suffer oppression.

Gentlemen, Get Off of the Couch! What will it take to get our men to see a doctor?

The show is committed to helping to communicate about issues related to health - especially for men. Recently the news reported that Washington, DC has an HIV/AIDS rate higher than West Africa. Diabetes and prostate cancer are two additional killers. I don't want to hear the doctor say, "Sir if you would have come in 6 months ago, we would have been able to do something about that." Our featured guests tonight are representatives from The African American Health Program (AAHP) - http://www.onehealthylife.org/ - was created and funded in 1999 by the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The mission of AAHP is to eliminate health disparities and improve the number and quality of years of life for African Americans and people of African descent in Montgomery County. The program focuses on six major areas which include infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, oral health, cardiovascular disease and specific cancers. Included in the services are outreach, health education, support groups and nurse case management services. While the program's offerings are available to all interested residents, the focus audience is the African American/Black residents of the county. The program is staffed by Registered Nurses, Health Educators and Community Outreach Workers. Join us for this show to get information, learn more about signs, symptoms, what you can do and additional resources. If you don't listen for you...do it for the family.

Using Poetry to Navigate Societal Mental Energy Fields (MEFs)

Spoken word, poetry, rap and other forms of creative expression have been instrumental in helping to increase the consciousness of many people allowing them to reflect on what's going on around them within them and through them. Ty Gray-EL will co-host tonight's show as we demonstrate how the creative expression expands the consciousness and touches our souls. Light casts shadows: will your response be from the light or from the shadows? You won't want to miss this one! Get ready to share your writing with the world. In the words of Marvin Gaye, "Let's Get It On".

Do You See What I See?

Hank Herring, ARTworks Resident Artist states, "I believe art should ignite your imagination and stir your soul." http://www.beaufortcountyarts.com/herring.htm A native of North Carolina, Hank Herring, a self-taught mixed media artist, is well known in the Beaufort arts community for his unique style of working with “rescued materials and found objects.” Working with driftwood or found wood, Herring illustrates the natural patterns of human and animal forms without the manipulation of tools or paint. “Using rescued materials in my work reminds me that the future can be built by using the past, whether its advice, thoughts or objects,” says Herring about his approach to working with objets trouvés. We meet many people along our journey on this earth but most times don’t take or make the time to communicate. Hank reflects upon the catalyst that got him started and wonders how many others have been overlooked and have not been able to make their contributions and in turn receive from others. What stops us from maximizing the talents we have been given? Is it timing, doubt, fear, lack of confidence or opportunity. What ever, we know that dreams as a result may never be realized. This week’s show opens up and facilitates the creative juices. Join us as we encourage one another beyond the wounds and into creative expression. We all have a contribution to make.

Was Man Made For the Earth or Was Earth Made For Man

Was man made for the earth or was earth made for man? Are we part of something bigger than ourselves or is that we have power over it all? If you are still you will be better able to hear the answer. Based upon the answer to these questions does that provide insight into the disconnection we have with and among ourselves and with one another? Are humans captives of a 'civilizational' system that more or less compels them to go on destroying the work in order to live? If you can’t discover what’s keeping you in, the will to get out soon becomes confused and ineffectual. If you can’t find the bars how will you ever be free or escape? What role do animals play and can animals help bring our souls back in line with being completely connected? Janet Sadler, Director/Co-founder, Little River Zoon, Norman, Oklahoma is our featured guest this week. Janet also holds a strong background majoring in marketing and media. Join us as we discuss our connections to animals, our environment and ourselves. The Little River Zoo http://www.littleriverzoo.com/ is located in Norman Oklahoma, was built in 1990, opened in 1996, over 100 different species reside there, approximately 50,000 visit through general admission while over 35,000 annually participate in programs year round on issues ranging from animal issues and rights to environmental, human rights, consumerism and others.

The Wisdom of and Relationships with Our Grand Mothers With Jan Spencer

Jan Spenser helps us rekindle memories and the wisdom given you by our grandmothers. Grandmothers are much younger these days but continue to have a major impact in the development of our youth. Share and listen to stories that have shaped us from the beginning. Jan Spencer performed as a jazz vocalist in numerous venues in and around her Detroit home, including the Montreaux Jazz Festival. She has also performed on national and international stages, television, and with such greats as Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Najee, Roy Ayers, Tony Bennett, Kris Kristofferson, Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Wonder, to name a few. Since her arrival in the Low Country, Spencer has maintained an active performance schedule, appearing in festivals such as the “Let’s Share” festival in Columbia, local and regional clubs, concerts, and television, and establishing a reputation as a world-class jazz vocalist. She has also worked as a resident artist in Beaufort and Charleston County schools, developing innovative, arts-based, educational programs for both children and adults. In June of 2004 the Arts Council of Beaufort County sponsored the debut performance and CD release party for her CD, “Tribute”. In May of 2005, The Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce sponsored the debut of Ms. Spencer’s one-woman show, “Jazz with Jan Spencer”, featuring Spencer at the piano singing the music from her CD, “Tribute”. Fans describe her musical style as Bill Withers meets Roberta Flack or Cassandra Wilson meets Brenda Russell or Carly Simon meets Nancy Wilson. Yet, she is said to have her own, unique style...smooth & jazzy with a bit of sass, especially when she sings the blues! All of the songs on the “Tribute” CD were either written or arranged by Ms. Spencer and feature the work of some of the South Carolina Low Country’s most talented musicians.
