Flashback: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Suicide, and the Lessons of War

To speak of joy in connection with this book, which contains so much pain, could make anyone uneasy. But joy is what I felt when I encountered the purity of Penny Coleman's writing, thinking, scholarship, and, most of all, compassionate understanding.

Jonathan Shay, M.D., Ph.D., Author  Achilles in Vietnam, Odysseus in America
Crucial reading for ALL religiously and spiritually rooted people should be Penny Coleman's Flashback: Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Suicide, and the Lessons of War. Coleman, the widow of a post-traumatic veteran who killed himself, has intertwined her own story with serious research into the disease.
Rabbi Arthur Waskow, Director The Shalom Center
From Iraq & Beyond: Unmaking the Idol of Violence, The Huffington Post

Flashback is a thoroughly researched chronicle of what was known and when about what is now called PTSD, how those lessons were applied (or not) during the Vietnam war years, and what the price might be of ignoring those lessons when contemporary soldiers, veterans and their families are in need. Framing the investigative portions of the book are the stories of thirteen women, myself included, whose husbands, fathers or sons came home from the war with psychological injuries that ended in suicide. Their stories give a human face to the theoretical and historical portions of the book.

Penny also testified before the House Committee of Veterans Affairs.
