At Fathers, Incorporated he focuses on the need to reaffirm the benefit of fathers within the family service paradigm. Since 2004 the agencies’ main focus has been on the development of support and services for fathers. FI, a not-for-profit organization, serves as a leader in the promotion of Responsible Fatherhood and Mentoring. This international focus raises the awareness about, and combats the impact of father absence. We do this through the use of innovative social marketing and multi-media platforms, traditional communications, and product development. Braswell’s work seeks to expand the range of work in the fields of comprehensive and non-traditional family service models. For the past several years, Braswell has worked to change the current societal and cultural definition of family to include fathers. As the field of responsible fatherhood expands, Braswell has also increased the reach of his work in include a focus on both mentoring and single motherhood. In the past, service providers have focused almost exclusively on reducing poverty for mothers and children. Today, research and practice tells us that we must do the same for fathers in order to ensure that they can provide for the well-being of their children - both emotionally and financially. As a result of his life's experience, Braswell is also a national motivational speaker. In this work he speaks to youth and adults in motivating them to be hopeful about life. Braswell writes a daily motivational word, weekly motivation notes and is currently working on a book entitled, "Diamonds in the Dark: A Quest to Finding Treasures in the Most Unlikely Places." The lack of African American male teachers has been defined as a nationwide problem (Tate-Billingsley, 2010). Data indicates that only two percent of the American five million teachers are African American males. United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan suggested that if America is to reduce the number of African American young men who fail to graduate, it is imperative that men of color are teaching (Tate-Billingsley, 2010). During this amazing conversation we will discuss the reasons behind the African American male teacher shortage and its impact on minority students. In the 50 State Report on Public Education and Black Males a study conducted by the Schott Foundation it was reported that the graduation rate for African American Males in the United State has become so dismal that an African American male has a better chance of being incarcerated than they have at earning a high school diploma. According to the report, the national graduation rate for African Americans males is 47% compared to 78% for white male students. This represents an achievement gap of 31%. Maryland has a graduation rate of 55% which is 8% higher than the national average and places the state in the top ten of states with large minority populations. Stu Silberman has led two school districts to prominence in the state of Kentucky and has three times been named the state Superintendent of the Year. Most recently, he was among the four finalists for the National Superintendent of the Year Award. Well-known for his mantra “It’s About Kids,” Silberman was hired in 2004 to be the fifth superintendent in three years for the Fayette County Public Schools. Since then, he has been credited with engaging the public, drawing more than 1,300 people to a summit on how to ensure that every student receives a world-class education. He has rebuilt faith with the community, instituting a 24-hour response time rule for phone calls and e-mails and launching dozens of communications initiatives to ensure transparency and openness. Student achievement has skyrocketed, with nearly 40 percent of local schools besting state proficiency standards six years early and a clear focus on closing achievement gaps and holding all students to high expectations. School board meetings, which just five years ago often lasted well past midnight, are now civil and productive with a focus on student achievement strategies. In an unprecedented show of public confidence, a school board vote to raise property taxes to address facility needs received no organized opposition and was affirmed without a voter recall effort.
