Ep 256 - What is Science?

    in Education

One of the more interesting things to come out of the last few months in my own personal Mixed Mental Arts experience has been hearing more from all of you how these ideas resonate with all of you. In particular, I appreciated a conversation with Matty (@Matt_Maurer on Twitter) about how he appreciated that history could be seen as one long progression. Humanity has always been trying to solve very much the same problems. It is just that over time we have been able to see further because we have had more and more shoulders to stand on. Why are we so much smarter than the people of the past? Well, coming of age in the culture of science, I was led to draw a sharp line between the scientific project and religions. Science was real. It was tangible. It was based on evidence. It was TRUTH. And anyone who disagreed, questioned or thought anything else was an idiot and a fool. However, as I've mentioned elsewhere, in reading the science that simple narrative has become increasingly problematic for me. The people of the past weren't so biologically different. Their brains recognized patterns. Did they not recognize patterns in human behavior that have stood the test of time? Yes. They did. And it wasn't until I was confronted by having to spend time among Christian Fundamentalists that I had to really think hard about what, if anything, made science special. Someone else who has had to think hard about these questions is today's guest sensei in the dojo Mohamed Ghilan. Mohamed was born in Saudi Arabia like yours truly. Unlike yours truly, he has a PhD in Neuroscience, is getting an MD and is a Muslim. As a scientist and a Muslim, he knows full well that the evolution of better and better beliefs and mental tools was going on well before science showed up on the scene. Today, someone like Mohamed is often portrayed in the media as a bit of a unicorn. He's a Mus

Part 2 Dreams Goals Vision Network Scholar With An Unstoppable Mission

    in Education

Mission Unstoppable, Extraordinary Stories of Failures Blessings
In June 2013, I was selected to be a part of the Marathon of Excellence which is a network of powerful entrepreneurs in based in the DMV area. We all traveled to the Power networking Conference. There I got a life changing opportunity. Mr. George C. Fraser; Author, Speaker and Networking Guru, was offering the opportunity to be a co -author in an upcoming book.
Realizing this was something that I needed and was told to do several times I listened to what Mr. Fraser was saying and knowing what I know about Mr. Fraser and myself, I realized that I had to be a part of this book. Upon learning the details I realized that this is ME. I saw the vision and I applied and went through the screening process and was immediately accepted to be an author in this powerful book along with Mr. Fraser, Susan Taylor of Essence Magazine and Dr. Randal Pinkett of the Apprentice. Knowing what I knew of them, I realized this was an awesome opportunity.
Later on it was announced that Mr. Les Brown was selected and working cooperatively in this inspirational and motivational book that asked the other 35 co-authors, “what is your greatest failure that you’ve experienced in life and how you overcame? So I tell my story in this book of why you can and must overcome any and all adversity. My experiences from growing up in Baltimore, MD, in the streets as I say and how I came to be connected, studying with and working with some of the most powerful and most intelligent scholars in the African-American community.

CJP Training Series - Children in Court and New WY Supreme Court Cases

    in Education

Children in Court and New Wyoming Supreme Court Decisions
Shawnna M. Herron, J.D., Senior Assistant Attorney General, Wyoming Attorney General's Office and Elizabeth Lance, J.D., Lance & Hall, LLP, a Wyoming guardian ad litem, will provide a presentation about the importance of a child's attendance at Wyoming Juvenile Court hearings.  The presentation will provide an overview of a recent Wyoming Supreme Court decision, In the Interest of DT and NT, Minor Children, 391 P.3d 1136, 2017 WY 36 (April, 2017). In this case, the Wyoming Supreme Court found a presumption that children be present at juvenile court, and the statute on permanency hearings requires the children be present at the permanency hearing, unless the court makes a determination that they should not be present prior to the hearing. The presenters will provide information related to recent amendments to the Wyoming Rules of Procedure for Juvenile Courts which requires, "a child shall be present at the permanency hearing in abuse and neglect actions unless the court orders prior to the permanency hearing that the child need not be present. If the guardian ad litem or other party believes a child should not be present at the permanency hearing, a motion outlining the reasons for the request for excusal from the hearing shall be filed no less than ten (10) days prior to the permanency hearing..." These rule changes became effective on June 1, 2018.  The presenters will provide practice tips about how to best comply with the rules.
