Busboys and Poets is a successful local chain in the metropolitan DC area. Andy Shallal, the founder is an Iraqi-American artist, activist, restauranteur. He opened up the first B&P in an area known as 'Black Broadway' during its heyday. 95% of business failed the first year. However, that's not the case with B&P. The restaurant has been a success from the beginning without committing advertising budget. Even during recession, still is a popular hangout place. B&P is one of a kind concept that combines a restaurant, a book store and poetry cafe all in one place. Every week they hosted 'open mic' for audiences and ASL, where Sign Language users from all corners of life will come together to recite a poem or a song. Recently, B&P become a "B" corporation.
