She's earned a Grammy nomination for The Roots' 2007 hit Don't Feel Right. And she's shared the stage with artists ranging from Erykah Badu to Brian Wilson to Big Daddy Kane. But the diva known as Mumu Fresh remains firmly rooted in her roots. "My family is from Mississippi, and I'd always hear my uncle and my mother—my uncle plays bass and guitar—talkin' about how when they used to live across the street from a blues bar, and Koko Taylor and so many of the greats would play there—Muddy Waters, a lot of those cats—and they'd tell me about it," Maimouna tells LOTL Radio host Reginald Ford of the inspiration for her album Black Magic Woman. "So I wanted to express it in the blues."
