Back from the brink: Obama retreats on controversial U.S. healthcare plan

President Obama was backtracking last night on his controversial plan to offer Americans a government-run alternative to private health insurance.

The White House U-turn came as Mr Obama sought to quell the growing row over claims he was trying to socialise medicine in the US.

Democrats feared the Republican backlash – which fuelled a storm in Britain over the merits of the NHS after American attacks – could jeopardise the administration’s plans for healthcare reform.

Mr Obama - who was pictured yesterday visiting the Grand Canyon with his family -  had been pressing for the government to run a health insurance organisation to help cover the nearly 50 million Americans who are uninsured.

By jettisoning the contentious public option, he is hoping to win the support of opposition lawmakers.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told CNN last night that the government-run alternative ‘is not the essential element’ of the healthcare overhaul.

She said the White House would be open to setting up non-profit insurance cooperatives instead, an option that would be more palatable to Republicans fiercely opposed to any further state involvement in the nation’s private sector-dominated health system.

‘I think there will be a competitor to private insurers. That’s really the essential part.

'You don’t turn over the whole new marketplace to private insurance companies and trust them to do the right thing. We need some choices, we need some competition,’ she added.

Mr Obama sought to distance himself from the ‘socialised’ NHS at town hall meetings over the weekend after the British system came under fire from his right wing opponents.

Despite Gordon Brown and David Cameron’s avowed support for the NHS, the president told a crowd in Montana that he was ‘not in favour of the British system’ and added: ‘I want to find a uniquely American system.’

Now he appears set to abandon the idea of providing state-run insurance altogether.

One of his most outspoken Republican opponents, Senator Richard Shelby, said co-ops – which would receive federal start-up money but operate independently of the state – might be a politically acceptable compromise.

He said it would be ‘a step away from the government takeover of the health care system.’

Republicans complained the public option would have unfair advantages that would drive traditional private insurers out of business.

Republican Senator Orrin Hatch said he was willing to head back to the bargaining table to try and find a solution to the healthcare impasse.

Mrs Sebelius said any deal is likely to cut a proposal to pay doctors for end-of-life counselling sessions.

Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin branded the meetings as ‘death panels’ and right wing activists suggested the sessions would decide whether patients lived or died depending on cash available.

Now the health secretary says the provision is likely to be dropped.

‘We wanted to make sure doctors were reimbursed for that very important consultation if family members chose to make it, and instead it’s been turned into this scare tactic and probably will be off the table.

‘And that’s not good news for the American public and not good news for family members.’

I hate to break this to you Comrade Peggy, but the lovely seniors of whom you speak ARE entitled to it, as they have PAID into it for the length of their working lives through their payroll taxes. They are rightly concerned that there won't BE a Medicare program that will be as well funded as it is now (and that's not saying much) because as seniors, they have lived long enough to know that money doesn't grow on a money tree. They're already on a fixed income. Where is the money coming from to fund this Peggy? Perhaps they should just do us all a favor and drop dead at 65, that'll save us some cash. As for 'the rest' that I'm being selfish about, spare me. You and I both know you want illegal aliens to be covered, and you want me (and the lovely seniors) to pay for it. However, I am NOT throwing my fellow Americans under the bus for your idiot politics. You want a fight on your hands, you've got it. Oh, and one more thing - we all get old, even you, remember that.

Uh, Lewis R--emergency care is NOT free in the US. Sure, they can't turn you away if you're bleeding to death, but trust me you will be billed for it.

Emily in NY is a perfect example of American selfishness. She's got hers, it works for her, and to hell with the rest. Working full time doesn't automatically mean you will have health insurance! In fact, more employers are dumping it because premium costs are rising. In reality, during a recession when jobs are scarce, employers realize they can offer way less and we'll take it. So not everyone that can't afford health insurance is a welfare loser. In fact, welfare losers are already receiving welfare medical benefits.

And lest we forget, how about all the lovely senior citizens who are on Medicare? Medicare is a goverment run health care plan for seniors. Ironically, it's seniors screaming the loudest AGAINST health care reform. They feel they are entitled to it, but god forbid anyone else get it.
