A South Korean vessel was captured after it accidentally crossed the countries' eastern sea border, a defence official says
North Korea has seized a South Korean fishing boat after it accidentally crossed the countries' eastern sea border, according to a defence official.
The incident reportedly took place at about 6.30am local time in the East Sea, and four people were on board the South Korean boat, an official at South Korea's joint chiefs of staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
He also said that the boat's satellite navigation system appeared to have malfunctioned and that a North Korean patrol boat took the ship into custody.
He said South Korea asked North Korea to release the boat but there was no immediate response.
The incident occurred amid tense relations between the states on the divided Korean peninsula over the North's nuclear and missile programmes. North Korea has been holding a South Korean worker at a joint industrial project since March.
Bilateral relations worsened after a pro-US, conservative government took office in Seoul last year, advocating a tougher policy on the North.
In retaliation, Pyongyang cut off ties and halted all major joint projects, except the joint industrial complex located just across the border in North Korea.
