Pupils told: Sex every day keeps the GP away

    An apple

A National Health Service leaflet is advising school pupils that they have a “right” to an enjoyable sex life and that regular intercourse can be good for their cardiovascular health.

The advice appears in guidance circulated to parents, teachers and youth workers, and is intended to update sex education by telling pupils about the benefits of sexual pleasure. For too long, say its authors, experts have concentrated on the need for “safe sex” and loving relationships while ignoring the main reason that many people have sex, that is, for enjoyment.

The document, called Pleasure, has been drawn up by NHS Sheffield, although it is also being circulated outside the city.

Alongside the slogan “an orgasm a day keeps the doctor away”, it says: “Health promotion experts advocate five portions of fruit and veg a day and 30 minutes’ physical activity three times a week. What about sex or masturbation twice a week?”

Steve Slack, director of the Centre for HIV and Sexual Health at NHS Sheffield, who is one of the authors, argues that, far from promoting teenage sex, it could encourage young people to delay losing their virginity until they are sure they will enjoy the experience.

Slack believes that as long as teenagers are fully informed about sex and are making their decisions free of peer pressure and as part of a caring relationship, they have as much right as an adult to a good sex life.

Anthony Seldon, master of Wellington College, Berkshire, who introduced classes in emotional wellbeing, said the approach was “deplorable”.

I cannot believe how sick these people are. Why don't they let our children grow up without sex being thrown at them left right and centre. Then they say the underage and teenage pregnancies rate is very high... i wonder why.......

    t., burnley,

Everyone should have the right to sexual pleasure. Look at the world health organisation's definitions.

Many teens have low expectations - many drift into sex, or are talked into it by a partner, maybe with alcohol or drugs.

Let's raise their expectations of sex and prevent this silent abuse

    Barbara, Glossop, UK

These perverts - because thats what they really are inside otherwise they wouldnt want to teach children how to enjoy underage sex - should be immediately suspended, sacked and then sued by the parents of whichever school or social services dept they happen to draw their wages from.

    Vile!

    paul, Bolton, England

Suddenly the slogan employed by a local school board here in Georgia, USA, makes perfect sense. It is; "Fulton County Schools - Where Students Come First".

    David, Marietta, USA

As a 16 year old Reading this I think the comments left against this is outrageous!
They are not saying that 10 year olds should be having sex they are saying that people in high school and upwards would benefit from having sex
I repeat BENEFIT as they are not forcing anyone to actually have sex!!!

    Craig, Sussex, England

I think that if young people are clear that sex can be pleasurable they are much more likely NOT to have sex for the wrong reasons, such as peer pressure. They are probably less likely to be sexually abused too.

    Ella, Bath,

More marriage breakdowns as men expect what they are being taught and women are dropping with exhaustion after a days work and looking after the children, a home etc. The last thing on a very tired woman's mind in the evening is sex. Not, obviously, that the government or men in general give a damn.

    judy, Liverpool, England

I didn't realize todays teenagers had cardiovascular problems. I would say most of them were suffering from anxieties and problems caused by being forced too early into adulthood by sex and drug education (which after all arouses their interest in subjects they may not have been ready for)

    Pete, Manchester, UK

Amazing that the British National Health Service gives this kind of information to youngsters whose hormones are already running amok.. It will certainly upset the apple-cart even more , as most parents of our Western World teenagers have already lost control over their spoiled and unruly children

    Rick, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This government has a brain the size of a pea when it comes to sex education. Faced with a lack of success in reducing teenage pregnancies and STIs, rather than try something different like abstinence education they promote more of their rubbish in more obscene ways. No wonder the UK is in a mess.

    Ashley Emery, Wimbledon,

Is Bordeaux in the UK? I thought it was on France (you know, that place just across the Channel:::). But what do I know, I live in Malaga, UK.

    Vic Nelson, (Málaga), SPAIN

Oh dear, and we as taxpayers are paying for these (s)experts. Is the NHS seriously saying this radical matter has been fully assessed before being released or is it a quango within the NHS whose incumbents are on a mission of self interest?

    Peter Glaser, Bodmin, UK

In my sugery, the consequences of teenagers' orgasms are are what bring then to the GP. STIs and abortions are ever increasing and the Teenage Pregnancy Unit was rightly condemned at a recent conference in London as ineffective. The only effect this campaign will have is to make matters worse.

    Trevor G S , Epsom, UK

While at age 71 I find regular dood sex with my much younger wife good for my well-being, as a child I also found swimming and cross-country running, later moto-cross, very good and far less stressful. But those were the days when we still had good morals and no meddling by inept social "experts"

    B J Deller, Marbella, Spain

A local school has a psychology unit to deal with the angry children who experience breakups of relationships and post abortion anger.
Teachers are required to have a level in psychology to deal with the mental problems some elements are thrusting upon our children.
One partner = health. I live it.

    Gail Mills, Bath, UK

I'm with Mike from Birmingham on this one

    P Thomas , Merseyside, UK

I wonder how many of those giving the advice stick to it?

    judy, Liverpool, England

Maybe they should provide beds in schools

    alan, machester, uk

Sure sex is pleasurable, but it comes with responsibility too, or at least it was meant to; children.
This policy seems just another of the i can have what i want, when i want and nothing else matters so long as i am enjoyning myself philosophy; look at society, it doesn't work.

    JL, London, UK

Why not show children a full unedited film of a baby being born when they are fairly young ,which I think will perhaps put them off sex until they are mature enough ?

    mike, birmingham, uk

I think focusing on the fact that sex is pleasurable will hopefully re-focus kids on choosing loving relationships rather than to reduce sex to a physical act. Healthy happy relationships which contribute to a persons wellbeing should be more important than scaring the hell out of young people.

    Anon, Slough,

    Oh great !!!!
The UK Taxpayer will now be paying for a few more thousand babies!

    Richard Garland, Greater Manchester,

Kids going out and having sex is an unavoidable fact of life but to encourage it is a mark of a degrading society. I'm not a prude by a long shot but even I see this is ridiculous.

    Ro, Swindon,

As a mature adult 50+ I firmly attribute my and my Partners health & happiness is due to good loving sex and the pleasure we get from exploring our sexuality. Only prudes who believe otherwise can disagree with good sex education.

    Tom, Dublin, ROI

For gods sake..is this what has happened to our culture? No wonder things are a mess for the youth. bedhopping is a no-no

    mel, london, uk

Not at all. The false pudeur seen in Britain and refusal to tell children about sex is the direct cause of the high rate of teenage pregnancy. Here we had sex ed at 10, 13 and 17 with varying degrees of complication - at 10 my teacher had a gynaecologist come to talk to us - and France has a low rate

    Dom, Bordeaux, UK

This is why Britain has the highest rate of sexually-transmitted diseases and also teenage pregnancy in Europe. Did these so-called experts tell children that it is illegal for anyone to have sex with them before the age of 16? This leaflet must be withdrawn and parents should protest.

    George, Bolton, England

Really idiotic advice to children, can't the NHS stop treating them like adults?

    G. Forshaw, Preston, Britain

I worry about the otherwordliness of people who believe that if you keep young people in the dark about sex, it won't occur to them to try it.

My understanding is that if you do it right, you get quite a lot of pleasure. Health educators who ignore that basic fact are unlikely to be successful!

    Tessa Trimble, Troon, UK

"Its proven that no sex & one partner means better health, no need for smear tests, stronger fertility & a clear conscience. "

Did you ask your partner ?

    Juergen Messner, Glasgow,

Foolish advice to children! Its proven that no sex & one partner means better health, no need for smear tests, stronger fertility & a clear conscience. We have the opposite & wonder why we have high abortion rates, STD, broken homes & medical services wasting millions on preventable health problems!

    Tim, Liverpool, UK

The most effective way of controlling the population is to keep them in ignorance
Managing our free will and the ability to express oneself are primary goals of the human species I would think, regardless of the topic

    Kate, Sydney,

If young people are given the full, step by step account of how to have sexual intercourse (and are not to be told it is good for them) - is it any wonder that they then go out and try it?

    Anne, Gloucester, UK

Being 'fully informed about sex' has led to the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe.

    MarkS, Leeds,
