Abolish death penalty, Amnesty warns Iran
Amnesty International called on Iran to abolish the death penalty following the execution of a woman convicted of murder at the age of 17. "The Iranian authorities must put an end to capital punishment," Amnesty International Secretary-General Irene Khan said. "This horrific and inhuman punishment denies both the victim and the perpetrator of their humanity." Iranian authorities hanged 22-year-old Delara Darabi on Friday. She confessed to the stabbing death of her father's wealthy female cousin but recanted the confession two years later, saying her boyfriend killed the woman. She claimed she confessed hoping for relief because of her status as a minor. Iran briefly stayed her execution. Amnesty spoke out against the execution, saying Iran is party to international treaties that forbid capital punishment for crimes committed by people under 18 years of age. "Iran must respect its international obligations, stop breaching international law and accept that it is wrong to execute those who may have committed crimes when they were underage," Khan said. Iran, facing international pressure, also stayed the executions of Amir Khaleqi, who killed a woman in a drunken rage at the age of 16, and Safar Angooti, who stabbed another man when he was 17. Both men were scheduled for execution Wednesday.
