Security sources say Israel and Iran are conducting rival intelligence operations in Eritrea, the poor African state on the Red Sea.
The Israelis fear Eritrea could be a flashpoint if Iranian Revolutionary Guards continue to ship arms to militants in Gaza via the Eritrean port of Assab. Israel is said to have two Eritrean bases, one a “listening post” for signals intelligence, the other a supply base for its German-built submarines.
In Sudan in February, Israeli drones thought to be based in Eritrea attacked an arms convoy bound for Hamas militants in Gaza, and several Revolutionary Guards escorting the convoy were reportedly killed.
Since 1993, when he received medical treatment in Israel, the Eritrean dictator, President Isaias Afewerki, has had a low-key relationship with the country. Butlast year a state visit he made to Tehran thawed relations with Iran, and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sang Afewerki’s praises. To Israel’s dismay, he announced closer economic and trade ties with Iran, and military ties followed suit. The Iranians have now established a naval base overlooking the Bab el Mandeb strait, through which 3.3m barrels of oil flow every day.
“Afewerki changed sides,” said Albert Katznelbogen, an Israeli businessman and former friend of the president. “Nothing moves in Eritrea without his say-so; he needs money, so the Iranians went in.”
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, describes Iran as “the biggest threat to Israel”, and the two vie for influence in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.
It emerged last week that Iran funded a terrorist network in Egypt, so Cairo is likely to become a staunch Israeli ally. Israel’s overseas intelligence agency, Mossad, told its Egyptian counterpart an Iranian network was planning to attack US and Israeli tourists and shipping, through Hezbollah in Lebanon. Forty-nine suspects have been arrested.
Who ever wants to get to the truth should watch a film called Lord of War. Its about the international arms trade. The reality is that all this political talk and angling is a total and complete farce. I bet Israel sold Hamas most of their weapons and that the USA supply Irans military hardware.
Tim, London,
The article quotes Netanyahu calling Iran 'the biggest threat to Israel'. The biggest threat to Israel is the growing fever of fascism taking hold of the minds and hearts of the people there and Netanyahu is one of the purveyors of that trend.

Iran better remember what kind of arms these german submarines carry if they want to survive as a nation.

Eritrean dictator, President Isaias Afewerki will do any thing to get publicity and attention. But your story is based on fiction than reality. Let alone the travel rom asseb to cairo there are no roads connecting asseb to asmera the capital of eritrea.

How is it possible for a small nation of Eritrea to host Israeli and Iranian bases in its territory at the same time? Surely the author aims to muddy the waters and isolate Eritrea from its Arab neighbours.
Hannes, London,
There was a story the other day about Hezbollah in the Sinai -intending to deliver Iranian arms to Gaza, being looked for by Egyptians and Israelis. That didn't fly, now they are trying another piece of fiction; anything to stick Iran with something plausible so that Israel can nuke them.
michael mazur, brunswick,
Well spotted Simon. Taking it by truck from Assab across Eritrea, then Sudan - where the roads are worse, then Egypt seems bizarre. Anyone who knows this terrain (I do) knows it's a nightmare journey, although not impossible. Putting the arms on to other boats & sailing up the Red Sea is more likely
Richard Norman, London, UK
.The question I would to ask is this, after the Iranians have brought the arms for Hamas to Assab, how then does it get into Gaza? Past the Israeli naval base in Dahalak or via Yemen and Saudi? If its going via Sudan, which quite a long way from Assab and it would make more sense to use Port Sudan
