It's been a long day of protest for the survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school shooting earlier this year on Valentines' Day.

I wanted to return to my show after taking a few weeks off to get over a bad cold to acknowledge that we as adults fail our children in many ways. One of the most significant ways we fail them is by failing to keep them safe from harm.

The kids are getting the right idea. When our children stand up and unite, nobody can stop them. I'd like to celebrate those children who banded together and insisted they be allowed to see the parent they were isolated from. Because, for those of us who have been denied the right to parent our children, it is as though they had died. We must find a way to pick ourselves up and live our lives without them. There is truly no recourse for us. We hope our children can somehow survive this cruel and silent nation that has deprived us of our voices and our rights as parents and as the adults we thought we were.
