She lives in California and is the founding member of Decoding Dyslexia CA. She is also on the board of her local IDA and is married and has two children. When she found out her daughter was dyslexic, she was surprised that there were no services available to teach her how to read. Back in the early 70’s Jennifer was taught to read with a special program, it worked so well that she never realized she had a problem. It was hard to believe that these services were not available for her daughter. Once she learned more about neurodiversity she realized over half of the people in her family had alternative wiring. The biggest surprise was, she too is dyslexic. Deborah Lynam is currently the Director of Parent Community Engagement at Learning Ally. She is a newly appointed member of NJ DOE's State Special Education Advisory Council. She is an active participant in the growing network of statewide parent-led grassroots movements called Decoding Dyslexia. She is a former Family Resource and Parent Group Specialist for NJ's Parent Training and Information Center, SPAN; as well as, a volunteer tutor for The Reading Assist Institute. Two of her three children are dyslexic and receiving services through their local public school district. 00:51:00Dyslexia Talknodyslexia, accommodations, teaching, teaching reading, special educationJennifer Biang is a Parent Support Specialist for Learning Ally. We are parents, teachers, advocates and policymakers who want all children to have the gift of literacy. What is Literate Nation's purpose? To help communities and states drive a seismic shift in their students'literacy outcomes so that all children grow to become literate, educated, and career ready. Why is Literate Nation different? We are different because we are mostly an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization of parents, teachers, scientists, and policymakers, that allows communities to take advantage of nationwide and global research, tools and expertise to benefit our children and make a difference near- and long-term for our country. 00:59:00Dyslexia Talknodyslexia, literacy, reading disabilities, learning disabilities, special educationLiterate Nation is a call-to-action grassroots organization comprised of cross-discipline team of literacy advisers that support community grassroots organizerEmbracing Dyslexia - Director Luis Maciashttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/dti/2013/08/06/embracing-dyslexia--director-luis-maciasEducationhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/dti/2013/08/06/embracing-dyslexia--director-luis-macias/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/dti/2013/08/06/embracing-dyslexia--director-luis-maciasTue, 06 Aug 2013 17:00:00 GMTEmbracing Dyslexia - Director Luis Macias We are honored to have the Director and Producer of Embracing Dyslexia join us on August 6, 2013. He will be talking about the impetus of his film and what he learned along the way. Director Luis Macias has always been a storyteller and a lover of cinema.  As a teenager he wrote several short stories and watched more films than any one person should.  After a brief swim in the pre-med pool, he found that he could not escape his love of films and of crafting stories.  That is when he enrolled at Chicago's Columbia College and majored in film and video editing.   Since 1997, Luis has been working as a video editor for a graphic design firm located in the suburbs of Chicago where he gets to use his storytelling talents with every new project.  In addition to client-based videos, he has had the opportunity to produce and edit six short documentary films for director Greg Samata, several of which have had successful runs in the film festival circuit.   Embracing Dyslexia is Luis’ directorial debut.  This film is a personal project that came to life after he and his wife learned that their son’s struggles with reading, writing and spelling were because he had dyslexia, a revelation that has changed their lives for the better. 00:59:00Dyslexia Talknodyslexia, learning disabilities, reading disabilities, special education, decoding dyslexiaWe are honored to have the Director and Producer of Embracing Dyslexia join us on August 6, 2013.
