    Healthy Breakfast Ideas

    Thanks to Wendy Battles for our healthy breakfast ideas show!

    For those who listened here are a couple of the recipes that she mentioned. For more, listen to the Healthy Breakfast Ideas show.

    Here are two recipes that I mentioned on Monday:
     
    Fruit Smoothie
    Serves 1-2
    1/2 cup spring water or almond, soy or low fat milk or 1 cup plain organic yogurt
    1 banana
    1 cup fresh or frozen berries or other fruit
    1/2 cup watermelon
    1-2 cups fresh spinach (optional)
    1-2 scoops hemp protein powder* (optional)
    1 tbsp. ground flaxseed* (optional)
    1 cup ice cubes (optional)
     
    Put in a blender, mix until smooth and enjoy this delicious concoction!
     
    *Hemp protein powder is derived from hemp seeds can be found in most health food stores. It’s an excellent source of plant-based protein as well as essential fatty acids.
    *You can find ground flaxseeds in most grocery stores. Or buy whole flaxseeds at the health food store and grind them in your coffee grinder.
    *Spinach has such a mild flavor that you can't even taste it and it's giving you veggies in the morning!
     
    Raw Oatmeal (Whole Oat Groats)
    Adapted from Raw Foods Made Easy
     
    Whole oat groats are found at health foods stores and contain more fiber than rolled oats. Oats are helpful in reducing cholesterol and keeping your colon healthy.
     
    Serves 4
     
    2 cups soaked oat groats (see below)
    1 apple peeled and chopped
    2 tbsp.  pure maple syrup or agave nectar
    2 tbsp. water
    2 tbsp. raw almonds
    1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/2 cup almond, rice or soymilk
    2 tbsp. raisins or dried cranberries
     
    Directions:
    Combine soaked oats, apple, almonds, maple syrup, water, cinnamon, vanilla and salt in a food processor or blender.  Blend until semi-smooth. Serve with milk and raisins or cranberries.
     
    Soaked Oat Groats
     
    2 cups whole oat groats
     
    Place oat groats in a mixing bowl and cover with water. Soak for 8-12 hours and rinse in a colander.  Soak for another 8-12 hours and then use them in the above recipe. Or store for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
