Today, Dr. Annie Abram and Ms. Darlene Kiyan of Break the Cycle will help us to start a conversation with young people about having healthy relationships.

Why is it so difficult, even scary, for parents to talk with their adolescents about dating, unhealthy relationships, and how they can best protect themselves?  Let’s get real: how many of you had a discussion about the birds and bees with your parents as a teenager? Frequently, we as parents don’t have the modeling of our own parents to guide the way.  But we must
find a way to start the conversation with our children/adolescents in order for both children and parents to feel as safe and protected as possible.

Darlene Kiyan joined Break the Cycle in 2014.  She has more than fifteen years of professional experience in human service delivery and advocacy. She has extensive experience in the management of non-profit organizations and programmatic implementation strategies.  Prior to joining Break the Cycle, Darlene was the Executive Director for Playworks, working with at risk youth, reducing bullying and developing leadership skills. Originally from Canada, Darlene graduated from the University of Alberta before moving to Japan to study language and culture. As a mother of two, Darlene understands the importance of empowering youth to have healthy relationships and is excited to continue the education.
