The J Ril Show

The J Ril Show

Hello Dr. Fuentes, I noticed your comments on another show page, that your son is a jazz musican...or am I reading that wrong. On one of our earlier shows, we had a brother on by the name of Vernon Daniels, he is a professional jazz musican who has played with artists such as Kim Waters, Grammy Award winning artist Yolanda Adams and many others. If you want, listen to the show in which we interviewed Mr. Daniels for info on how to get your son's music heard by him and others in the business. Anyways, take care and hope to see you soon on The J Ril Show!!! Be Blessed! Jay

    MI THEORY - Howard Gardner

During my family life in bringing up a child with autism and completing my own research book, I have always applied much of the MI Theory to my learning games, family music, and life itself as follows:

Article by verbatim:  Multiple Intelligences Theory

Howard Gardner introduced the theory of multiple intelligences in his classic book, Frames of Mind (Basic Books) in 1983. In this scholarly work Dr. Gardner provided extensive support for his proposition that there is more to intelligence than what shows up on an IQ score. Based on a unique definition of intelligence and eight criteria, he carefully describes how a broad array of evidence supports the powerful idea that the human mind possesses at least seven distinct forms of intelligence. In 1996 he added the eighth intelligence to the list, Naturalist, in recognition that the understanding of living things (flora and fauna) is not sufficiently covered by the original seven intelligences.

As of this writing, Dr. Gardner is reviewing the status of the proposed Existential intelligence that was introduced his in 1999 book, Intelligence Reframed. For a brief description, click here.

The definition of intelligence used by Howard Gardner "The ability to solve a problem or create a product that is valued within one or more cultures" provides a powerful foundation for understanding the full potential of the human mind/brain.

The eight criteria used to identify the multiple intelligences. For more information click here.

Five Autism Types Explained by Rachel Evans, UK Medical Researcher

The below article is by verbatim:

    Five Autism Types Explained
    by Rachel Evans

Autism used to be the term used for anyone with that particular condition. Today, there are several different sub categories for different levels of disability or function. No two children diagnosed will be the same, but there will be many things that they do have in common. With some high functioning autistics most people may not even be aware that they have autism, while others need assistance in almost any part of life, and they are obviously living a very different life than other children. More is being discovered about each of these different autism types as time goes on.

    Article Source: http://www.articlerich.com.

    Asperger's Disorder

This type of autism is something that you hear more and more about. These children are often misdiagnosed at first, and are thought to have Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or perhaps Attention Deficit Disorder. These children are very unskilled with social interactions and have problems with communicating. They have repetitive motions, and are fixated on patterns of all types. They can have above average language skills, though they don't use them well in social situations. They are often clumsy, as motor skills are under developed. Those with Asperger's are thought to have a talent that they focus on almost exclusively, and are considered to be highly intelligent. Recent findings indicate that Albert Einstein may have had this condition.

    Kanner's Syndrome (classic autistic disorder)

This particular type of autism was named after a Dr. Kanner. He described and studied it in the 1930s and into the 1940s. This is the well-known type of this condition that is very common. Those with Kanner's have very limited emotional connection with anyone, and they are very into their own little world. They want everything to be the same all of the time, and this includes routine (sometimes down to the exact minute) clothing, food, and television shows or movies. They can be deeply effected by noises, bright lights and smells. They are generally considered to be low functioning, but how well their mind works is largely unknown because of extremely poor social and communication skills.

Pervasive Developmental Disorder--Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).

This term is used to describe children who have most of the same symptoms as classic autism. They will need the same interventions and help that autistic children require. The differences between PDD-NOS and autism are minor and usually only obvious to researchers and doctors.

    Rett's Syndrome

Rett's is a rare and relatively little-known type of autism, and it seems to only happen in girls. This branch of autism was first described by Dr. Rett. These patients often have problems with muscle atrophy, and tend to do repetitive hand motions. They area almost always mentally retarded to some degree. These girls are very low functioning and will need care for most of their lives. This particular type of autism has been diagnosed since the sixties, but in the late 1990s a gene that might cause this condition was found.

    Childhood Disintegrative Disorder

This is also thankfully pretty rare and something that strikes children who appear to have normal development from birth. Usually between two and four years of age this changes. These children begin to regress, and often do not potty train. They will lose the will and the ability to interact with other children, and will lose an interested in play. They will also have problem with the motor skills that were something they at one time had mastered. They will stop talking, or their communication skills will regress to some degree.

Though there are more autism types out there, these tend to be the most common. They are all things that take parents by surprise, and each comes with their own set of difficulties. Most children will need to be cared for long after their peers have established independence, even though the will to be on their own is very strong.

Algebra - My Learning Games on Quia!

    ¡Tenga un gran día!

Click on my ad below for my "Easy Coordinates" Game.  Try it for those that need confidence to work with the Coordinate Planes!

    What makes my game interesting?

In most graphs, there are linear lines with arrows that some people with disabilities find intimidating. But in my graphs, I have replaced the linear lines with colorful alphabet letters and large points to solve the coordinate planes.  Since most autistic children love color, large letters, pictures, and music.  My graphs are mostly like a picture that invites one to solve math problems with ease.  In addition, I have added very soft music to keep a student more involved when playing the game!

Characteristics of Autism - Chapter 5

Chapter 5 * Pg. 15:  Explains how an autistic person functions.

In my book, Chapter 5, Pg. 15 describes characteristics of autism for those that need clarification.  Autism is not like any other disorder as follows:

    -------------

    Chapter 5

    ** CHARACTERISTICS OF AUTISM **

COMMUNICATION: Autism affects the ability of a person to understand the meaning and purpose of body language and the spoken and written word.
    1. Meaning -- Words can be misunderstood, interpreted literally or not understood at all. Other people's feelings and emotions can also be difficult to understand.
SOCIAL INTERACTION: Social interaction for autistic people can be difficult, scary, and very confusing.
    1. Meaning -- May withdraw and become subdued; tries hard to be social but never gets it right. People with autism can find friendships difficult.
BEHAVIOR: Impairments in communication and social interaction produce a range of behaviors that have become linked with autism spectrum disorders. These may include:
Speech - absent, delayed,  or  showing abnormal patterns
    * Meaning-- Very hesitant and slow speech.
Play - isolated, repetitive, unimaginative, destructive, obsessive
    * Meaning-- Not aware of how to play gentle and harmless with other children.
Tantrums - can be a way of expressing extreme confusion and/or frustration
    * Meaning-- Because autistic children do not know how to communicate with others, they tend to scream or make sounds that draws attention.
Sensory sensitivities - to certain sounds, colors, tastes, smells, textures
Obsessions - intensive interest in favorite topics, objects, places, people, or activities
    * Meaning-- Some may have an extreme attachment with toys, people that they like, a particular room, chair, etc.  They will not let go of it easily.  Sometimes, they become more extreme when someone close to them dies, relocates, or divorces.
Insistence on sameness - routines bring some order to the autistic person's confusion - a change of routine can be very difficult to cope with
Body movements - such as hand flapping, toe walking, repetitive movements, prolonged thoughts, and occasionally behavior that may cause self-injury (such as hand biting)
In my conclusion, autism can be mistaken and very well taken for granted if one is not aware of its characteristics.

    Autism Genes, Math, and Music

Please observe below (verbatim) article by

October 4, 2008 by Kristina Chew, PhD
    Filed under Genetics, Music, Science

A study of autism among 378 Cambridge University students has found that autism is up to seven times more common among mathematicians than among students in other disciplines, and that it was also five times more common in the siblings of mathematicians, according to the October 5th Times. The genes that are thought to cause autism may also give mathematical, musical and other skills to those without autism. The study was led by Simon Baron-Cohen, director of the Autism Research Centre, who is quoted as saying:
