At age 17, Genarlow Wilson, a typical teenager, enjoying the moments of his senior year of high school, did what many teenagers do, he acted without thinking, making a decision that would alter the course of his life….
His life was forever changed on December 31, 2004. He was convicted of Aggravated Child Molestation after a New Year's Eve party at a local hotel in Douglas County, Georgia. Due to Georgia's law at the time, certain sexual acts between teens (Genarlow was 17 and the girl was 15) meant a mandatory 10 years in prison and a lifetime on the sex offender registry. Genarlow's highly publicized case led to the Georgia legislature passing a Romeo and Juliet provision in early 2007 which made consensual sexual acts between teens a misdemeanor.
Today, Genarlow is a 25-years old graduating senior studying at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia where he is pursuing a degree in Sociology. When he is not studying or working he is committed to educating young people encouraging them to make the right choices. Mr. Wilson hopes sharing his story will help other young people avoid a similar fate.
