Kids & Dogs Safety -- > for Parents and Dog Owners

Summer is "Dog Bite Season", with bites increasing by 75% over the summer months when more people and dogs are outdoors. According to the Centers of Disease Control, over 2 million children are bitten annually and a recent study by Safe Kids Canada revealed that children are 10 times more likely to be bitten by a dog, than struck by a vehicle. What is even more dismaying is that 70% of the victims knew the dog that bit them!!!  --So these aren't stray dogs or abused animals, these are family dogs and neighbors' dogs! There are a number of Dog Bite Prevention programs for school-age children to teach them how to handle a confrontation with a strange dog. But what about confrontation with a familiar dog? Most kids, parents, and dog owners trust dogs they are familiar with, and so do not look for the subtle warning signs indicating a familiar dog is preparing to bite. In addition, the methods for diffusing a confrontation with a strange dog versus a familiar dog are different. Despite this, there is almost NO instruction provided to parents or dog owners on diffusing high-risk scenarios: --> When a child is charged by a strange dog, the child is usually off their home-turf, and the stimulus for the dog's attack is usually territorial or predatory. --> With dogs in the home, the situation is inherently different. Most bites in the home are normal child-dog interactions that have edged into the "Danger Zone" without parents realizing it. According to the ASPCA, kids that love animals have empathy for other living creatures, are kinder, tend to not bully others, are more social and do better in school. So having a family dog is a great thing -- all that is needed is a little instruction! If you know of a parent or dog owner who should hear this show, please let them know about it.

Is there Really a "Dog Bite Epidemic"?

In 1996, in the report "Fatal Dog Attacks, 1989-1994", the Centers of Disease Control called dog bites a "largely preventable epidemic".

In 2008, the CDC stated in the report "Dog Bites: Still A Problem?" that dog bite numbers are unchanged.

    Therefore:

The CDC called dog bites an epidemic in 1989.  In 2008, the CDC says dog bite totals are unchanged == ergo, there is still a dog bite epidemic.

The answer is: Yes, there is still a "Dog Bite Epidemic". Period. Subject closed, already!  ...Sheesh!

Are Dog Bites Increasing or Decreasing?

The results of our 2004-2007 North American Dangerous Dogs Investigation suggest that dog bites are increasing, rather than decreasing or remaining static.

During our 3-year investigation, we found that the vast majority of dog bites go unreported, likely because society as a whole does not yet realize that small bites often lead to big bites, (i.e., a dog that has learned that an act of aggression achieves its objective will resort to using its teeth to achieve success in the future, typically with an increase in the intensity of aggression exhibited as confidence is gained).

In most cases, victims and witnesses did not report minor bites unless and until a more serious bite had occurred. Owners tended to excuse and justify even severe bites from their own dogs. One dog ripped his owner's ear off and the owner had his brother, a cosmetic surgeon, sew it back on. The bite was never reported, and the owner shrugged off the vicious attack as, "It's my fault -- he was tired of me hugging him." This is an extreme case of a pervasive tendency for owners to minimize or justify even severe acts of aggression.

We confirmed that in the vast majority of Dog Bite-Related Fatalities, previous acts of aggression and even other bite incidents had preceded the attack.

We found that the majority of dog bite victims who were friends or family of the dog's owner did not report the bite as such because they didn't want their dog, or their friend's dog, to "get in trouble". We found this to be the case, even if the bite was severe enough for the victims to seek treatment at a hospital. In these cases, bites were frequently reported as injuries from a variety of falls, (off bikes, down stairs, in the woods, etc).

We found that veterinarians, vet-techs, groomers, boarding kennels, and trainers were experiencing an increase in dog bites which they rarely reported as such because they did not want to alienate clients.

Finally, it was also our experience that people have less free time now and are thus socializing and training their dogs less, and that this is likely contributing to the observed increase in dog bites. But again, without a centralized repository of dog bite information, conclusive data on the number and type of bites occurring is simply not available. For more information of the findings from our three-year Dangerous Dogs Investigation, please see the websites: www.PreventDogBites.com, and www.PreventDogBites.ca.

Dog Blog Radio -- Inaugural Show!!! Redemption for Michael Vick... NOT!

Without fully comprehending ALL the power available to us on BlogTalkRadio, (or even where the "On Air" light is!) we have ventured into the realm of independent radio! VERY exciting!

I wanted to create a blog, but was deterred by the fact that I type with only 2 fingers, and can only manage about 12 words a minute. But I can TALK!!! Most folks speak at about 300 words per minute -- I literally blow people away by hitting gusts of 600!!! So when I found out that a radio-based blog was a possibility, I knew I'd found my medium of choice!

And when I heard the conclusions on Dog Doctor Radio that Michael Vick had paid his debt to society and should be forgiven, just as Martha Stewart had paid her debt to society and had been forgiven, I almost blew a gasket!!!

-- And the rest is history! I aired the first Dog Blog Radio show just minutes after hearing this impossibly idealistic, unrealistic, naive (I'm being kind!) position on Vick's redemption. As I pointed out in the show:

How can you compare Michael Vick to Martha Stewart?

Martha Stewart's crime was a white-collar crime -- she did not intentionally inflict pain and death on a loving sentient being. Michael Vick intentionally inflicted pain and death, either through his own action or knowledge of another's action.

Let's see ...non-violent crime vs. violent crime... stealing vs. horrific death... Are those equal? If, to you, they are (and everybody has an opinion!) then yes, Martha paid her dues to society, and so has Vick, so they should both be forgiven.

But if those two sins are not equal in your mind, if you believe as I do that disregard for life is embedded in the genetic material of an individual, then you will never forget, and never forgive Michael Vick.

Studies have shown that cruelty to animals --if left unchecked-- often results in cruelty to humans (most often to children, who are also incapable of defending themselves).  ...Which puts animal abusers in the same class as serial killers and child molesters!!!

Michael Vick --and EVERYONE who has ever been found to be an animal abuser-- should NEVER be allowed to own an animal again. Period.

Catch up with us on our next show, where we will re-address the problem of Animal Abusers: Are they born or made, or both, and what do we do about them? Can we recognize and stop animal abuse tendencies in children --and if so, how? How can we stop a societal ill that has not made marked improvements in the last 50 years? What we are doing is NOT working... What will?  Email me your questions and comments:
www.dogblogradio.com. I'll dig up some research on it and get back to you!

    Until then, remember:

Dogs ROCK! and Pets are FOREVER!!!
