Thursday, April 14th.
1:00PM-2:00PM CT Destiny Survival Radio with John Wesley Smith.
Today's Topic: Earthquake Preparedness. This is a show you won't want to miss!
John's guest is Steve Besemer, Program Manager for the Missouri SEMA Earthquake Program. Missouri is one of the states participating in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut, a 5-minute earthquake drill that will be held at 10:15 AM CDT on April 28, 2011.
The highest earthquake risk in the mainland United States outside the West Coast is along the New Madrid Fault which runs through Missouri and several adjoining states. Missouri will also be the focus of a National Level Exercise by FEMA on May 16–20, 2011, which will simulate the catastrophic nature of a major earthquake in the central United States region of the New Madrid Seismic Zone.(NMSZ).
The Great New Madrid Earthquake of 1811-12 was the largest earthquake east of the Rocky Mountains in the history of the U.S. and was several times larger than the San Francisco quake of 1906. It was actually a series of over 2000 shocks in five months, some of 7.6 intensity and five of which were 8.0 or more in magnitude. Eighteen of these rang church bells on the Eastern seaboard and one quake in February 1812 actually made the Mississipi River run backwards for a few hours!
