I salute women across the world as they celebrate their day today. It’s clear that women have been the driving force of economies in most African countries. Our women have shown interest in taking this country to the next level as they have been working tirelessly in their capacities. Gichugu MP Martha Karua and nominated MP Millie Odhiambo have been giving a good account of themselves in Parliament. Ms Karua has been instrumental in key reforms, making sure that the interest of Kenyans come first. Kenyans cannot forget their icon, Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, who has indeed inspired and continues to inspire many women in the world. Women have nowadays turned to breadwinners in towns and rural areas as men are busy drinking chang’aa. We cannot forget the contribution of media women presenters like Caroline Mutoko of Kiss FM who has been helping the less fortunate, especially in the slums. She has sponsored poor but bright girls in rural areas, and remains a role model to many young girls. However, women still face problems in their daily lives, including discrimination in the workplace, violence, FGM and human trafficking. Happy International womens day.
