Prof Fred Otieno holds a BSc (Civil Eng) Hons, (UoN), MSc and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. He also holds a MBA degree from the University of KwaZulu Natal, RSA. He has over 25 years work experience since graduating. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers (FSAICE), the Institute of Waste Management of SA (SFIWMSA), the Water Institute of Southern Africa (FWISA). He is also a Professional Engineer in Kenya, South Africa and the UK. He was President of Water Institute of Southern Africa (WISA) in 2007/2008 He is currently employed as the Deputy vice Chancellor: technology, Innovation and Partnerships at the Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa. He previously worked as a consulting engineer, researcher and entrepreneur in civil and environmental management. He continues to consult in his areas of specialization for a number of organizations –the private sector, local authorities, NGO’s, Government Departments, UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, and the World Bank amongst others. Among other roles he plays include being Vice Chairperson and member of the Governing Council of the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI) of (UNESCO), Board Member of the Engineering Standards Generating Body of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). He currently sits as a Board member of Randwater (the biggest water utility in Africa) and the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL). He has carried out research in a number of disciplines and projects, culminating in various research reports and over 50 refereed journal publications and over 90 refereed conference proceedings. He is a rated Scientist with the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. His areas of research interest are water and waste mater engineering, solid waste management, environmental management and general strategic management.
