Kenyans abroad could be allowed to vote at the August 4 referendum if an application filed in court is allowed. The application lodged before the Interim Independent Constitutional Dispute Resolution Court in Nairobi is seeking to have the voter register re-opened to allow electronic registration of all Kenyans in the Diaspora. A US-based scholar Barrack Otieno Abonyo filed the application only hours after the same court opened the doors for all qualified inmates to be registered and allowed to vote at the referendum. In the application highlighted before lady Justice Violet Mavisi by lawyer Charles Kanjama, the university lecturer and five other political activists are seeking to have the Interim Independent Electoral Commission ordered to facilitate immediate electronic registration of all Kenyans abroad. This should be made through the Kenyan missions, consular and embassies abroad, with possible provision for electronic voting in the referendum. According to the Foreign Affairs website Kenya has more than 50 missions and several more accreditations covering about 100 countries. Abonyo is a pharmacologist in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Florida A and M University, US, from where he mailed his court papers. The court certified the application as urgent and directed to serve the State with the papers and return to court on Monday for submissions.
