Two lovers jailed for 14 years...for being gay A judge summed up the country's draconian anti-homosexual culture as he told the couple: "I will give you a scaring sentence so the public is protected from people like you, so we're not tempted to emulate this horrendous example. "Malawi society...I do not believe is ready at this point in time to see its sons getting married to other sons." He described same-sex relationships as "un-Malawian". Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, and Steven Monjeza, 26 - seized after their engagement party - were jeered by a mob in Blantyre as they were led away. Civil rights activist Gift Trapence, who was in court, said later: "How can they get 14 years for loving one another?" Amnesty International's Michelle Kagari called the sentence "an outrage". Equality minister Lynne Featherstone, foreign minister Henry Bellingham and overseas development minister Stephen O'Brien said in a joint statement: "We are deeply dismayed by the conviction." Malawi gets 40% of its income from aid and the West has long urged the country to soften its anti-gay stance.
