Drug barons getting ‘real dirty’ New anti-drugs tactic unveiled Drug barons exploit lax Kenyan migration laws Ex-Panama dictator Noriega extradited to France According to Malindi chief magistrate Lucy Gitari, the harsh sentence would deter others from engaging in the crime. The court heard that Mohamed Famau Bakari and Omar Bakari Mwaguro were arrested during separate incidents trafficking various kinds of drugs within Malindi District. A ‘‘not guilty’’ plea by Mwaguro was dismissed by the magistrate because he had been charged with a similar offence in the past. Ms Gitari observed that the accused had not reformed. Famau was charged with trafficking and selling 16 sachets of heroin and 41 rolls of bhang within Maweni slums in Malindi. On the other hand, Mwaguro was arrested trafficking 50 tablets of rohypnol and several rolls of bhang around Serena area on the Malindi-Lamu highway. In a separate development, a 35-year-old mother of three hanged herself in Magarini District at the weekend because she was “fed up with life.” Malindi deputy OCPD Willy Simba said Ms Nyevu Kenga Mbovu’s body was found dangling from a tree outside her house. Meanwhile, at least 300 inmates at Shimo-La-Tewa prison are undergoing rehabilitation to keep off drugs. Coast provincial prisons commander James Kodieny said most of the prisoners were hooked to drugs before they were jailed. Mr Kodieny said that prison officers were working with a non-governmental organisation, Reach-out Centre Trust, to counsel the inmates. “We are encouraging the inmates to quit drugs before they complete their jail terms. This way, they will be better citizens in the society,” the prisons official told the Nation.
