We see it, read about it, and hear it in music; Urban life – life in the projects. Our black and brown boys face challenges living in the projects that are often sacrificial and even deadly. Today’s media glamorizes urban life of our black and brown boys, often missing the message as well as contributing to their demise. Please join Denise Bolds, MSW author of Raising Princes to be Kings: A Single Black Mother’s Guide to Raising Her Black Son and Torrey Maldonado, author of Secret Saturdays. Maldonado grew up in Red Hook Projects, obtained his college degrees (one from Vassar College) and taught in NYC schools for ten years. “Although set in a tough neighborhood in New York, the topics of poverty, fatherless children, friends and tough choices are topics that kids everywhere can relate to. The situation of boys insecure about communicating their feelings with other boys without seeming "gay" is practically epidemic and compounding that with the fact they sometimes live without positive male role models is a recipe for disaster.” This show is dedicated to all of our black and brown boys who did not live to tell their stories… Get Ready to be Empowered!
