  Paul grew up in poverty in a small rural town named Henderson, North Carolina. He is the oldest son of nine children born to parents who worked on factory jobs, 28 and 27 years respectively.

   

  Neither his parents, nor grandparents before them earned their high school diploma. Paul knew from an early age that education was the key out of poverty, so he mapped out his success plan and focused his attention on being the first child in his immediate family to graduate from high school.

   

  As life obstacles present themselves, Paul ran into a bump in the road in the form of his high school guidance counselor. During what should have been an enjoyable experience, ended up being a hurdle to jump.

   

  Paul’s high school guidance counselor informed him he was going to graduate on time; however she stated he didn’t have what it takes to become a successful college student. After this pivotal conversation, Paul spoke with his parents about the guidance counselors comments and they instructed him to continue applying for admission to college.

   

  After football practice and track practice Paul studied into the wee hours of the night and found his passion was learning. He graduated from high school, a few short months later and was admitted to Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

   

  Fast forward four years later, Paul graduated with academic honors from Shaw University with a bachelor degree in business and was a distinguished graduate of Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps. He was also commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force during his graduation.

   

  After nearly eight years in the USAF, Captain Vann separated from the military and was recruited by Mobil Oil Company in Beaumont and Houston, Texas.

  Two years later the USAF recalled Paul back to active duty and he was assigned to the Pentagon for 12 consecutive years, including a year in the Capitol Hill Fellowship Program working for a member of Congress. In 2002, Paul retired in the rank of lieutenant colonel.

   

  Today, Paul leads his professional speaking company which includes delivering financial literacy programs, leadership talks, motivational speeches and inclusion/diversity and diversity-train-the-trainer programs. His unique upbringing, diverse career experiences and certification as a financial expert positions him to resonate and effectively connect with audiences throughout the U.S. and Canada.

   

  Paul is the author of the highly acclaimed book, Living on Higher Ground. He was recently interviewed by Dr. Maya Angelou an Oprah Radio host, the focus of the interview was based on the question, “What is it like to be an American?
