Correctional chaplains provide spiritual care to those who are imprisoned and separated from their family and friends—from society in general. These chaplains also provide spiritual care to the institutional staff and to the family member of staff and inmates as requested. Jewish and Christian correctional chaplains may derive their sense of calling and vocation from the words of the prophet Isaiah (which Jesus claimed for himself in Luke 4:18-19): "The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners."
