TEXT: John 5:15-18

A.W. Tozer said, "If man had his way, the plan of redemption would be an endless and bloody conflict. In reality, salvation was bought not by Jesus' fist, but by His nail-pierced hands; not by muscle but by love; not by vengeance but by forgiveness; not by force but by sacrifice. Jesus Christ our Lord surrendered in order that He might win; He destroyed His enemies by dying for them and conquered death by allowing death to conquer Him."

The conflict between Jesus and the Jewish religious authorities continues almost from the beginning of Jesus' ministry until its very end. There were many things these leaders did not like about Jesus, but the main thing they hated was that Jesus claimed to be God -- or, as they would have said, claimed equality with God.

Jesus, for His part, never tried to convince them that He was God. He never tried to prove this to them or make them believe it. He let His works speak for themselves. Jesus claimed not only to be doing the work of God, but to be working with God. He called God "My Father", stating plainly that He was IN UNION with God. This made the religious leaders hate Jesus all the more: He implicated God in what they saw as a crime -- working on the Sabbath day.
