There are some who believe the sign of Christ’s coming, as described in Matthew 24:6-7, was World War I. However, the generation that saw the World War of 1914-1918 (which was, interestingly enough, followed by famines, pestilences, and earthquakes) has almost vanished from the earth. Not very many people who can remember the events of 1914-1918 are still alive. They are over 90 years old today. Note that Christ said they would see “all these things take place,” which would include the seven-year Tribulation period. So we must add another seven years to that generation’s age, making those people over 100 years old. Every day that passes finds fewer of that generation still alive. Consequently, although the interpretation of World War I as “the sign” is still possible, it has become increasingly unlikely.
