TEXT: 1 Timothy 3:1-7

You may have heard about the new movie titled "The Fifth Estate" that is coming out on October 18th. The film is about Julian Assange and the WikiLeaks operation that leaked a large amount of secret communications between numerous governments including the United States.

The term "estates" or "estates of the realm" is a historical term that divides society into different groups of people based on their role in life. I believe that God has a special message for each of these different groups today, beginning with the first estate. Some of you might be wondering what are the "estates"?

The system of the estates emerged in the Middle Ages and was the broad social order of the Early Modern Era. The "estates of the realm" are most frequently associated with France, however, England, Scotland, and many other European nations had the same social system or one that was very similar. In this system, there were three "estates".

The first estate was made up of the clergy -- the bishops, the lay preachers, the deacons, the monks, the nuns -- anyone who worked for the church, whether it was Roman Catholic or Protestant. The members of the first estate were at the top of the food chain so to speak. They were the most important members of society. They spoke for God. Some of these members were rich and owned a lot of land; some of them were very poor and were barely paid for their service to others. But, they all were exempt from taxation.
