1. According to Reuters and the Jerusalem Post, four Egyptian ministers resigned from the government on Monday, a day after protesters poured onto streets to demand President Mohamed Morsi resign. Morsi stayed out of sight throughout the protests but acknowledged through a spokesman that he had made mistakes while adding that he was working to fix them and was open to dialogue. He showed no sign of quitting.

2. According to the Associated Press, a heat wave punishing several Western states brought at least record-tying temperatures to Death Valley and Las Vegas over the weekend. The Los Angeles Times reported that the National Park Service thermometer recorded a temperature of 129.9 degrees, which shatters the record for June.

3. According to The Times of Israel, John Kerry's efforts to bridge the gap between Israel and the Palestinians and resume long-stagnant peace talks have yet to bear fruit, but the US secretary of state reportedly managed to wring concessions out of both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas during meetings over the weekend.

4. According to The New York Times, European officials and politicians reacted angrily to reports that the United States has been spying on its European Union allies, saying the claims could threaten impending talks with Washington on an important trade agreement.

5. According to CNN, the United Kingdom has taken a step toward being the first country in the world to allow a pioneering in vitro fertilization technique using DNA from three people that could prevent mitochondrial diseases but that also raises significant ethical issues.
