Russia's defense spending is on the rise. According to World Net Daily, Moscow is to increase its annual defense spending by 59 percent by 2015 as it attempts to modernize its military. Increased spending reflects the latest in Russia's military doctrine that is meant to address its security strategy and what it defines as threats to the homeland.
Israel successfully tests upgraded Iron Dome with longer interception range. According to The Times of Israel, Israel has completed testing an improved version of the Iron Dome missile defense system, which can intercept medium-range missiles held by Hezbollah and Syria that could reach the center of the country. The army said it had carried out the tests with a new, fifth battery of the Iron Dome system, which will be added to the four already deployed in Israel's south to intercept rockets fired by terrorists in the Gaza Strip.
Iran strengthens its naval presence over disputed islands. According to Reuters, Iran will increase its naval presence in the Gulf to strengthen its authority over three islands which the United Arab Emirates says are its territory. The islands sit near oil shipping routes at the mouth of the strategic Strait of Hormuz and the challenge over their sovereignty is a constant threat to Iran's fragile relations with its Arab neighbors.
