North Korea threatens 'merciless punishment' as it prepares rocket for launch. According to British newspaper, the Telegraph, North Korea has threatened retaliation and "merciless punishment" against any country that shoots down the long-range rocket it is preparing to launch this coming week. Japan and South Korea have put their armed forces on standby in response to North Korea's plans, prepared to shoot down the missile if it passes over their territory.

Doomsday shelters are being built in Kansas. According to the Associated Press, tucked deep beneath the Kansas prairie, luxury condos that can withstand an atomic blast are being built into the shaft of an abandoned missile silo to service anxious -- and wealthy -- people preparing for doomsday. So far, four buyers have plopped down a total of about $7 million for havens to flee to when disaster happens or the end is nigh. Developer Larry Hall says the buyers "worry about events ranging from solar flares, to economic collapse, to pandemics to terrorism to food shortages."
