The good thing is we are Dads, and what a catalyst in understanding the importance of no longer accepting the phrase, “Do as I say, not as I do.” That way of thinking, just doesn’t apply when you’re raising your children.
This seems to be the motivation for most of our guests – they all want to better the lives of their children and are not about to let the Internet or some safety issue be their downfall.
Like Tom said, it’s not the stereotype of a dirty old man, he’s a kind gentle looking person who’s a conman – he’s not the stranger, chances are he knows your child well.
I like Tom’s keyword for those individuals that hide behind anonymity pretending to be your child’s friend… “Keyboard Cowards”. It’s important for parents today to understand the New Net-Generation and how to empower their children with the necessary behavioral skills and guidelines on how to conduct themselves online and offline.
Brett recognizes that a good student translates over to good cybercitizens. A big part of that is due to the parent’s involvement and the communication in the family. Brett not only instructs the child, but also passes those instructions on to the parents.
Tom’s observation working with troubled children is that their online experience allows them to act out and become the cool guy for once. Their less likely to have had parental guidance and are more prone to act out in a destructive way. We know from our previous guests that many cyberbullying events are started in the moment, by teens, not realizing the virtual consequences that may occur.
Tom points out that if you are a target of trash talk, “Pay it no mind”, don’t read it.
Tom is a renowned Body Guard for individuals like Chris Rock, Chuck Norris, Bruce Willis, Britney Spears, and a host of others world famous individuals. He wanted to make the connection that kids need to see themselves an s their own celebrities and think of how to protect themselves as their own body guards.
When confronted, Tom wants the children to know how to walk away. Tom wants to make the point when someone is in your face, that the longer you stay, the more you hear, so he wants kids to learn these rhymes:
According to Tom, while the person is in your face talking to you, look for a safe zone or a person to move to, all the while looking for safety. Don’t talk; the further you get from the person the less you’ll hear in your ear canal, and the less gets embedded in your head. If the bully has no one talking back, the less conversation, the less fuel to ignite.
These are a few of the many good tips that Brett Lechtenberg and Tom Patire shared with all our listeners. If you want to learn more about what Tom had to say about walking around talking on your cell phone listen to the interview.
