Russian Roulette Is Not A Game...Neither Is The Chocking Game - Some Teens Don't Know The Difference

This is not new; however, with the power of the Internet, its popularity is growing. It's practiced predominately by adolescents and teens and is called by many names and the outcome is your child is dead, brain damaged, and/or a life of diminished capacity. And the absurdity is, it's called the "Choking Game". It's as much a game as "Russian Roulette".

Carlos Flores, a pediatric nurse in emergency trauma care and trauma coordinator for Children’s Hospital Central California in Madera, County, and is an authority on the "choking game".

The Choking Game is a high risk activity being played by pre-teen and teen kids, usually peaking at age 13 for both boys and girls. This activity causes a self induced loss of consciousness by hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and is responsible for hundreds of deaths worldwide. There are a variety of methods that are used, all legal and seemingly innocuous, including a method using ligatures. The first step in prevention is awareness.

This high risk activity is performed individually, in pairs, or groups of kids. Essentially they are altering their sense of consciousness by restricting the supply of oxygen to their brain. This is accomplished by hyper ventilation by creating an alkalosis and throwing the PH level out of whack, creating a vassal constriction and diminishing the flow of blood to areas of the body; particularly the brain. Another step is by holding your breath and bearing down without exhaling. Another is chest pressure where a child holds their breath and given a bear hug. Carlos explains other methods which can be heard on the show and what happens when kids participate in these behaviors. If it doesn't kill your child it does kill brain cells and the accumulation damage of this activity should be a concern for parents.

It's not uncommon for many of the victims of the choking game to be ruled a suicide by hanging, when in fact it is not.

Most children and teens have no concept of their own mortality. So, how do you reach teens that feel invincible and bring it to a level that they understand? Carlos replied, "You need to reach them on an emotional level". Carlos reaches children by giving them real live scenarios, talking to them about families that he has met, and then introduce them to videos of actual cases of parents that have lost a child.

Carlos, as well as the CyberHood Watch, are proponents of monitoring your children's online activities and in the case of the CyberHood Watch we strongly endorse PC Pandora for monitoring and the fully managed personal computer service provided through Invisus Direct for your families protection.

We discussed the tragedy of the survivors of the victims and how it affected them. We were fortunate to have Sarah Pacatte (www.StillLovingMyGabriel.com) call in to the radio show. I've got to tell you that I have read this story and listened to the 911 call and it will break your heart to hear so much sorrow in one child's voice. Please, let others know about this tragic and senseless activity teens are involved in. I mentioned earlier the Internet and how kids are instructing other kids on how to do this activity and it's imperative that we as Responsible CyberCitizens let other parents and guardians know about this activity.

    Here are some warning signs:

    1. Recognize it

    2. Severe headaches

    3. Disoriented

    4. Argumentative and aggressive behavior

    5. Linear bruising or redness around the neck

    6. Blood shot eyes; blood red

    7. Sleeping during the day

    8. Ligatures, bungee cords, belt, ropes, braided plastic bags

    9. Wear marks on furniture (around bunk beds) or furniture, wear marks on dowels in closet

Let others know and send them to this post or forward the post to others.

"We All Wear Sunglasses And It's Not Because Of The Sun"

By day he's the CEO of the West Jordan Chamber of Commerce for the past 22 years. And when justice calls, he's the man on the '97 red Road King, Harley Davidson complete with roll bar and shield for his special passenger. Craig Dearing is a member of BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse). On this ride, BACA has adopted an abused child and has empowered them with a sense of belonging and knowing they are safe.

Craig remembers the meeting when he was introduced to BACA, they touched my heart and I had good feelings and I liked how they accomplished what they did, said Craig.

I asked Craig, "What came first, the biker or the cause"? It's the cause that draws us to it, said Craig. Bikers have a soft spot for children. Hollywood portrays bikers as harden individuals and BACA members use that image as a double-edged sword. That "bad guy" Hollywood portrayal sends a message to the perpetrator and yet children see
right through the leather and the ruff image and bond with the bikers. It's like Craig said, "Who would you rather have, Mr. Rogers or a bunch of Bikers"? These abused kids feel safe with Bikers. They are part of something, they are part of the brotherhood of bikers; it's a sense of belonging. "It's a good stereotype", said Mr. Dearing.

While explaining the procedure of how a child is adopted into the family and what happens, something that Craig said caught my attention. And that is 80% of the perpetrators are close neighbors. This fact is probably why Nancy McBride, National Safety Director of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children said in her
interview that she would like to see the phrase, "Stranger Danger" stricken from the English language: it's misleading.

Craig talked about his first ride and the effect it had on him and the child. It was a transformation for the 12 year old that went for the ride and it was also a turning point for other organizations like the Children's Justice center to witness the effects that BACA had with children. It established trust with the agencies on behalf of BACA.

Craig Dearing shared a few personal observations and wishes:

    1. Parents need to be parents, not friends. When they are 18 then you can become more of a friend.

    2. For whatever reason, the problem is with the parents wanting to be friends to their kids and thus kids are not getting the necessary guidance.

3.Parents need to speak frankly with their kids, not to frighten them but, so they are aware of the dangers. Don't scowl at the lady in the grocery store dealing with her kids, instead maybe offer some assistance.

    4. Cooperation between all agencies. Try to remove the redundancy/duplication of efforts.

    5. Eliminate child abuse. Craig Dearing would like to take a Sunday ride for other reasons but, until that day he ride for BACA.

Craig Dearing help start the Exchange Club about six years ago which formed the Healing Fields in West Jordan, Utah that honors the children that have died from child abuse. There were 1,475 flags representing child abuse deaths in America and 38 flags in Utah over the past five years.

To find out more about BACA, visit www.BACAUSA.com or if you would like to donate or get involved their hotline is:
    (801) 860-9860. To contact Craig Dearing personally, his email is: EagleMan(at)a-col.com

Dates to remember: Third Saturday next April, a ride for Child Abuse Awareness month, and the BACA 100 mile ride the fourth Saturday in April.

Oh Yeah! Very important Bill and I were invited to go on a ride... I want the big red Harley.

"I Never Thought This Would Happen To Me"

No one thinks they're going to be a victim", said Bob Mack retired Major Crime Investigator wishing he had a dollar every time he heard the phrase, "I never thought this would happen to me".

Social morals have changed, right and wrong could be delineated, they were innocent troubles; talking out of turn, chewing gum, or cutting in line. Today, its rape, robbery, and murder said Bob. There has been a breakdown in the family and the family values.

Technology has spurred an evolution in police work. Now, officers receive and transmit information instantly; it's an age of cell phones and lap tops. However, even with this technology the truth is law enforcement cannot keep up with how the internet has exponentially catapulted cybercriminals. Criminals are not local any longer; they are attacking from the other side of the planet, in countries where laws and corrupt governments don't care. There are no laws for extradition, prosecution, jurisdiction, and costs are enormous. The circumstances are large and complex. "It's like trying to put a band-aid on a severed artery".

Bob shared some personal tips to keep our children safe:

    1. Be involved with your child, know what they are doing.
    2. Listen to what your child is saying.
    3. Know where your children are.
    4. Have a safety plan, a place mutually agreed upon, where they can go to as a safe place.
    5. Agree upon alternate safe individuals to go to.
    6. Keep the computer in a common area.
    7. Keep your children busy with healthy and positive activities.
    8. Monitor your child's activity on the computer; know where they've been and where they're going on the computer.

Bob said, approximately 10% to 15% of the pedophiles believe they have an intrinsic right to have relationships with children. There are also organizations trying to enact laws to lower the age-of-consent. There was a time when sexual child abuse was viewed by law enforcement as a family matter. However, the results were children lived a life of fear, difficulty in adjusting, which ultimately manifested itself in troubled behaviors and being
dysfunctional in society. Mr. Mack covers this more in the interview. Now, instead of law  enforcement looking at this as a family matter, there is collaborating among police and professionals to help victims understand it is not their fault.

It must be understood that cybercrime is worldwide and law enforcement and the government have never dealt with crime on this large of a scale before. "Law enforcement is reactive not proactive" said Bob. Consequently, you can do only so much and cybercrime is unlike any other crime that law enforcement has had to deal with. "There is no magic answer" said Mr. Mack. However, Bob is adamant about a service he has found that he feels is the answer to law enforcement and families when it comes to protecting individuals online and offline when it comes to defending your personal information and your identity... find out what this 32 year retired Senior Crime Investigator specializing in child abuse recommends...

Pursuing Career Criminals... Poses New Insights For Investigator

Robert (Bob) Mack depicts a career minded roll-up-your-sleeves kind of guy. Bob's professional career covers both military and law enforcement and has covered the gambit when it comes to professional career specialty areas. One of several thoughts we'd like Mr. Mack to share with our listeners is the influence the Internet has on crime and new trends in crime that the public should be aware of.
