Show Notes

Over the past 2 years we have had the pleasure of having some of the best and brightest authors in the world join us weekly on The CyberHood Watch Radio Show. Take quick tour and see a few of the many CHW Authors that have been guests on CHWradio.com

Dave and Bill feel a very special responsibility in sharing our guests advice, opinions, insights and experiences. It’s our hope that our guests will inspire our CyberHood Watch audience to become active in their local neighborhoods and participate with and learn from their children on how to use the internet safely.

In this process of learning to use the internet safely, parents will be a focal point in the teaching of their children. In this ever-changing New Net-Generation… called the CyberHood, we all find ourselves in the dawning of a brand new decade, and one that requires us to all be good citizens online as well as offline.

What does it mean to be a Responsible CyberCitizen? Being aware of what information we post about ourselves and others online, how we treat others online, and watching out for others while they are online.

With over two years worth of interviews we have had the pleasure of having over 100 guests on our radio show. To see who our guests have been, see our Cyberhood Alumni page.

Thanks to all the authors that have joined us in the past, we have enjoyed your presence and welcome you back at any time. Don't Recycle Predators... The Internet Allows Our Kids To Travel Far Away From Home And Alone

You'll Never Get Away With That"!  What if that was the thought instilled in the mind of every predator? How many less victims do you think there might be?

To paraphrase our guest, Lauren Ayers Ph.D., on today's CyberHood Watch radio show, if there were two criminals and the one said to the other, Let's break into the White House they'll have plenty of items." The other criminal might say, "You'll never get away with that." And he would be right. That's the message we need to instill in a predator's mind when he harbors any thoughts of contemplating a criminal sexual act of a child or young adult.

Lauren's goal is to make sexual abuse of kids a crime of the past. How might we accomplish this? One of several suggestions offered are creating a "Family Policy". First, it opens a dialog so kids are not left alone to deal with the abuse (literally or preventive). A parent will make it clear what they would do (removing the child from the equation) these are young minds and not equipped to handle the advances of the perpetrator. The family policy would broadcast clearly that as a parent, "I will report suspicious behavior to a "Mandate Reporter" (teacher, nurse, or other trained and approved licensee) and let them evaluate the information and file a report if deemed necessary.

Another suggestion is to establish with your children that there are no secrets. If there are any secrets they should be shared with the parent, and the parent will if it is appropriate, take action. Secrets associated with embarrassment or shame will sever a bond with the parents.

Children need to be taught an escape hatch. Teach your children not to get into what they can't get out of. For example, a car, a motorcycle, a boat, a home, etc.

There needs to be a shift from sex abuse programs for children to sex abuse programs for parents.

Our kids are not law enforcement personnel nor should they be detecting and reporting sexual crimes. Which is one reason why our current sex prevention is increasing the risk of our kids. Sexual predators understand all to well the current reporting system and can easily manipulate and confuse the young minds so they don't know how to report what happened.

If we don't become responsible cybercitizens, create sex abuse programs for parents and remove the burden from kids to police the behavior of sexual predators, we'll end up recycling predators until another has recorded 36,000 sexual abuse cases like convicted molester, Dean Arthur Schwartzmiller.

2008 Second Edition Release "Don't Take Candy From Strangers" A Gift From The CyberHood Watch

"Who Is Asking Your Child to Be Their Valentine...Online?"

It's an important question that every parent and grandparent should think about in today's world of social networking sites if they care about their child or grandchild's well-being while online and/or off-line.

Today was a great show which I had the pleasure to interview my partner, Bill, on the release of his 2008 second edition, "Don't Take Candy From Strangers". The book is a must have guide for parents, grandparents and teens to understand and navigate safely the real dangers that lurk on social networking sites and in particular; MySpace.

It's not a question of forbidding or banding young adults from social networking sites, in fact the opposite is true. It is an acceptable and a healthy part of their development. However, it's a question of parenting and setting guidelines that allow young adults their social freedoms, while at the same time, teaching them to be cyber-savvy-kids.

"Don't Take Candy From Strangers" is a valuable resource that allows you to get a quick peek into a predators mind, how they operate and what is necessary to keep your child out of harms-way so they can enjoy their peers and enjoy new technologies that are valuable learning tools. And to be aware they can also be a threat at the same time. However, armed with knowledge these threats can be disarmed.

Learn more and grab your gift and share it with others. It's our wish that you will tell others so they too can be armed with good information on staying out of harms-way. This book will get into the hands of one parent, grandparent or teen and will make a difference, and that will make it all worth while...it could be a child you know.
