On Thursday, May 26, GlobalSign, an established Certificate Authority (CA), will be announcing results of a survey of 107 healthcare industry IT security practitioners, with over 51 percent coming from organizations of 5,000 or more. The results demonstrate that when it comes to data security, privacy and compliance, healthcare organizations have cause for alarm:

 

• 71 percent of respondents are having to spend as much as 50 percent of their time focused on compliance related functions, leaving only half their time available for pure security and privacy related projects; in some cases, they are spending upwards of 100 percent of their time focused on compliance

 

• 34 percent of respondents’ organizations have experienced a patient-records data breach within the past two years

 

• 23 percent of respondents say they believe healthcare data breaches that cost organizations at least $100,000 are happening every week

 

• 50 percent devote the most time dealing with State of California compliance regs., even over HIPAA and HITECH
