As Internet Safety Month approaches in June, now is the best possible time to teach consumers about how they can be safe online and protect their privacy. Debra Berlyn is a consumer expert who has spent years working on this issues of online safety and privacy. She is president of Consumer Policy Solutions, an organization focused on protecting the interest of consumers, and director of the Consumer Awareness Project, an initiative created to educate consumers about both online and mobile safety and privacy concerns on the Internet. With over 18 years of consumer advocacy experience, she is a seasoned veteran of handling in-depth, policy issues. She is experienced in communicating complex language and issues into easily understandable, applicable messages for consumers. Ms. Berlyn currently serves as the chairperson for the Federal Communications Commission Consumer Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Consumers League.
As a consumer advocate, she frequently participates as a speaker at industry events, engages in social media regarding consumer privacy and is interviewed by the media. She has also been published in regional national outlets including: Boston Herald, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Norwich Bulletin, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Tampa Tribune, Daytona Beach News-Journal and the New Jersey Herald News. Most recently, she appeared on WTOP’s “Of Consuming Interest” program with Shirley Rooker to speak about the National Broadband Plan, cyber security, personal responsibility online and other general online safety information.
