Laurie Endicott Thomas is my guest to expand your speaking abilities. Blog Site: www.nottrivial.blogspot.com Laurie Endicott Thomas has worked as an editor for many years. In her upcoming book, Not Trivial: How Studying the Traditional Liberal Arts Can Set You Free, she explains how problems in our educational system have undermined democracy. Children who have never learned phonics have trouble in learning to read, and people who have never studied grammar have a hard time in learning to think logically. Unfortunately, when people cannot use logic, their political discussions degenerate into name-calling and hair-pulling. In ancient Rome, the trivium of grammar, logic, and rhetoric were reserved for the children of freeborn people, as opposed to slaves. Thomas argues that these studies are not trivial, in the modern sense of the word trivial. They are essential for democracy.
