La Bayamesa originated as a love song from a romantic husband to his estranged wife and later evolved into a popular protest song against Spanish oppresion In Cuba. It then became the national hymn after Cuban Independence. We chronical it's evolution and add insigh through geneological research and other historical references into the lives and fate of it's prinicipal protaginists in their heroic struggle for Cuban liberty against Imperial Spain.
