    REVERSE

    This week we had Sherri Franklin from Muttville.org as our special guest. Muttville is a non-profit charity that rescues senior dogs from California shelters which are slated for death, often being the last phone call, Muttville is truly a life-saving group. Operating with approximately 60 volunteers, they pick up the dogs, get them any medical care needed, provide foster homes, and seek adoptive homes to provide a permanent, loving home for these dogs.
    At the end of June, Muttville hosted a large fundraising event, dubbed Moolah for Mutts. You may remember us promoting this very special event for several months, as it was hosted at a house that had been featured on a segment of "This Old House". Additionally, they didn't just have one thing going on that night, they had several. They hosted a wine and cheese tasting, a silent auction, a live auction, raffles, and more. It truly was a special event at a special venue, and we are told that it was quite successful! Many Artisans heard our pleas and sent products and donations which helped to make this event the success that it was, so THANK YOU ALL!!!!

    The No Speed Limit Highway looked at aromatherapy for dogs. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants in healing. These oils contain a number of properties, many can act as antibiotics, antiseptics, and antivirals. Oils can also act as a stimulator for the body to trigger its own healing abilities. First you have to decide on the specific essential oil that is needed for your dog. There are simply way too many oils, as well as ailments for me to cover here, so please consult your Veterinarian and/or published texts for more information about the use of essential oils. Once you have decided on the oil that you need to use, place ten drops of the oil into a cup of hot water, and put the cup near your dog's head while he/she is sleeping. Try to keep it warm for about one half hour, using a candle or coffee warmer. After thirty minutes you need to stop using for at least thirty minutes, then you can heat and sniff again of needed.  Here are some to try;

        * Peppermint for the treatment of gastritis
        * Rosemary for certain heart problems
        * Peppermint to suppress kennel cough
        * Peppermint relieves itching if your dog has mange
        * Geranium and Rosemary work well if your dog has pancreatitis
        * Eucalyptus helps if your dog has a respiratory ailment such as pneumonia. This is obviously a serious respiratory problem. Consult your Vet. immediately if signs occur
        * Many different oils are used for the treatment of various emotional issues, such as lavender to calm a hyper or stressed dog or citrus to invigorate a depressed one.

    Check with your Vet for more, or read more about essential oil therapy at your local library.

    Our sister charity, EFA (Etsy for Animals) has named its July charity [of the month] as, Save the Rhino International. You can visit them at; http://www.savetherhino.org, chosen by Becky of http://beckybutton.com  Save the Rhino International works to conserve viable populations of critically endangered rhinos in Africa and Asia. They recognize that the future of wildlife is inextricably linked to the communities that share the Rhino's habitat, so by funding field projects and providing education they hope to deliver long-lasting and widespread benefits to the Rhinos, to other endangered species, to the ecosystems, and to the people who live in these areas.

    -As we head into July and the heat of summer, we want to remind you that even the healthiest pets can suffer from dehydration, heat stroke and sunburn if overexposed to the heat. Heat stroke can be fatal if not treated promptly, so everyone needs to be vigilant and watch out for the symptoms of overheating. Excessive panting or difficulty breathing, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or collapse are symptoms that can indicate heat related illness. Additionally, pets can also suffer from seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomiting, along with an elevated body temperature [over 104 degrees].  According to the ASPCA experts, taking these simple precautions can help to prevent your pet from overheating;

      *Avoid dehydration by always having fresh, clean water available and lots of shady places where pets can cool off.
      *When the weather’s extremely hot, keep your pets indoors.
      *Give your dog a light summer haircut to help prevent overheating. Shave the hair to a one- inch length, but never down to the skin, as fur offers protection from the sun.

      *Brushing your cat more often than usual can also help prevent problems caused by excessive heat.

      *When using sunscreen or insect repellent, be sure the product is labeled specifically for use on animals.

      *Never leave an animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time—even with the windows open, which could lead to a fatal heat stroke.

     *and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke, get help from your Veterinarian immediately.

    -We now have a Flickr group, Yes, CreativeAnimalRelief is now a flickr group!! You don't have to be a member of CAR to join, so stop by and take a look! Join us and submit your animal pictures, or pictures of the animals at your local shelters/charities.

    FORWARD-

    This week actually began a month long series on senior pets. Join us next week when we be discussing how to care for your aging pets and their changing needs. How do you recognize changes? What can you do for a blind pet? A hard of hearing one? A senile one? And, when is enough, enough? A natural death versus a compassion trip to the Vet.

    OVERDRIVE-

    This section is dedicated to charitable requests. This weekly section will list various non

    -profit animal charities that are in need of funds and/or products for upcoming events. All

    members are encouraged to review these requests and to help where they can!

    If your group, or a group that you know of, has a special event or need, please visit

    http://creativeanimalrelief.org/ and click on the charitable request form.  We also post

    private need requests on other venues, so fill out the request form for any and all animal

    related needs. Once filled out, we will review your request and place it here, on our

    website, on our yahoo group page, or maybe even mention it on air! (we reserve the right to decline to advertise any event that does not meet our requirements). We want to organize all financial requests so that our members are not overwhelmed, so we have created guidelines for publication of these events. This area is generally dedicated to the 501c3 large events.

    *The national canine cancer foundation will be holding a perfect tweet contest to raise e funds in a fun way for cancer research  check out www.perfecttweet.com for all the info  $5 for each entry will buy ya lots of fun  and the potential to win lots of prizes!

    *DRINK GOOD WINE and SAVE GOOD ANIMALS at the same time! Muttville has joined the list of rescue partners of the fine folks at Canine Wines, who give $5 of every bottle they sell to help animal rescue groups. So, when you purchase a bottle of wine from them, simply mention Muttville and they will earmark a donation for them!

    *The Animal Rescue Site is still having trouble getting  enough people to click on it daily , which means that they fail to meet  their quota for getting free (donated) food  for the abused and neglected animals that they care for on a daily basis. Since we all love animals,  I thought I'd post this here to see if you would help!
    It only takes about 15 seconds of your time to go to their site  and click on the PURPLE BOX, "CLICK HERE IT'S FREE", and you will help to FUND FOOD FOR ANIMALS FOR FREE! This  only costs you your time, so please click it! Then tell all your friends to click it!
    So you understand what the deal is, their corporate  sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to calculate their donation of  food  to abandoned/neglected animals, in exchange for  the advertising. Here's the web site!    http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/  After you click it, PLEASE TELL ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS to do the same!.

    *Please dont forget that  fellow Artisan, Katie Brown, a Texas Artist, has brain cancer. Her medical bills have become outrageous while her career as a professional artist has come to a standstill. Due to her condition and the treatments she is unable to work. Her friends with the Craft Mafia have been working hard to get a Fund set up for her. If you are interested in helping Katie, or if you would like to help the Craft Mafia in their efforts to help the ever growing financial burden for Katie’s family, please contact: Patti Hinkley at queenoherbs@yahoo.com.  The Craft Mafia will be holding a fundraiser for Katie, so if you are in the San Antonio area please go by and check it out.
