    Under the Hood 2/25/09

                                                   Under the Hood for 2/25/09_

    REVERSE-
This week we began a two episode discussion on the illegal smuggling of animals.
This is a huge problem world-wide, in the US alone, it is reported that wildlife shipments generate six billion dollars annually. This makes it second only to drugs in profitability!  We MUST get involved and speak out so that we can effect change! Up to 30% of ALL the illegal traffic, about $4 billion worth,  goes through LAX each year. This flow is monitored by TRAFFIC USA, a division of the World Wildlife Fund and includes both plants and animals. While there are 200 agricultural and customs inspectors, the wildlife facility has only ten inspectors.  This is so bassakwards!  We need to have this changed, and the only way to do that is to ban together and speak out!

    We also learned of
Javier Cervantes, a man that opened his home (in Mexico) to stray animals. After receiving threats, and just as he was preparing to move his 70 or so animals to a piece of donated land, his home was broken into. Several masked men, wielding machetes, wreaked carnage, killing 40 animals and badly injuring many of the 30 that lived.
Even though the sounds of crying and dying animals could be heard for blocks, the local police were not moved, and made comments about it "just being dogs"!. Needless to say,  justice is not anticipated.
We have been provided links to people that could make a difference. We strongly encourage  you to write and express your moral outrage at their lack of concern and dedication to treating this crime as a crime!  A mans' home was broken into.  A neighbor who heard the commotion and came to try to stop them was beaten unconscious.
40 animals were slaughtered. Numerous others were injured. And, on top of everything else, Mr. Cerventes has lost his home since the police won't allow him back in.
I know this is a foreign country where the animal population is out of control, but THIS WAS A CRIME, actually SEVERAL crimes,  and this case deserves to be treated as such!! Please check out this link and sign the petition,
www.petitiononline.com/jalt2009/petition.html  Then, please write to the links below, in the Bark Out Loud section. Only by shinning a light can we chase away the monsters that lurk!!!!!

    • *The Carolinas Jack Russel Group will be holding their annual
fundraiser, a JRTCA sanctioned trial, on May 2 and 3 in Sumter, South
Carolina. They are expecting approximately 350 entries in the show,
and will be having a raffle fund-raiser on May 2 at the trial site.
Proceeds from the raffle will go to benefit the Carolinas Jack Russell
Rescue. Their organization helps displaced and abused dogs, and they
are in need of product donations for this raffle. Please visit them at
      http://www.cjrtc.com. for more info.

center. They are currently asking for donations of products, services,
or gift certificates to be auctioned off over the net. They will
provide donators with advertising by placing contributor links on
their auction website. Please visit www.itsmeowornever.org for more
      details.

silent auction, live auction, raffle, wine tasting, food & beverage
event will take place in a church that has been converted into a home,

                      March 27, 2009.

    • BARK OUT LOUD-
Bark out loud, bark out proud! Please contact the following links, write or email all  the officials at the addresses listed below. We need to shine a light and draw attention to the horrific way that they are handling the Javier Cervantes case! Remember that the squeaky wheel gets the grease and that these people will not want their lack of concern being publicized. They do NOT want to loose tourists. We can positively impact this investigation if we show them that we CARE about the animals, as well as the humans!  If we all stand together we won't fall!
