    Under the Hood 2/18/09

    Under the Hood for 2/18/09
REVERSE- This week we began the show by wishing Gena a speedy recovery, as she was ill. Somehow we managed to go on though, largely because we had the great fortune to have Susi of http://knobnots.com join us as our special guest. The shows topic was rare  breeds, and Susi owns and shows one of the oldest rare breeds, and arguably the most interesting in looks, the Puli.  These dogs have corded coats that reach the floor after about 6yrs of growing!
Almost extinct at the start of World War II, the Puli has made a come back in numbers, and remains a quite interesting breed. It is highly intelligent, very agile, and very loyal to its family. Of course it can also be very head strong. Originally bred to herd and to keep company with the Shepherd, Pulik (plural of Puli), love to work and still need plenty of exercise.
For more breed information, contact the National Puli Association. As the current information officer and group Secretary, Susi will be happy to provide you with any and all details about this unusual breed!

        •  -With spring around the corner, now is the time to check your plant and mulch labels for potential pet toxins. Some cocoa mulch is dangerous to dogs because of the cocoa and caffeine levels, so before you plant or lay new mulch be sure to check the labels! The SPCA has a list of poisonous plants on their web site., so check there if you need help.

        • -The American Craft Council Show is hosting a craft show with over 700 crafters, live demos and student works at the Baltimore (MD) convention center, Feb 27-March 1. If you live in that area and want to try and win a one day pass ($14 value) to this monster event, email hellocraftinfo@gmail.com  with the word BALTIMORE in the subject line. The Winners will be randomly picked on 2/20, so email before then! For more info check the web site,  craftcouncil.org/baltimore.

        • -Sahara Rain has graciously agreed to donated one of their newly released cd's to the CAR shop so be on the look out for that!

    • -Spay Day USA is February 24, 2009

-A logo winner has been chosen......I think! lol. If so, this will be announced on the website this week and on the show next week!

DRIVE; Next weeks show is HUGE! So huge in fact, that we will be taking two weeks to discuss this topic in depth. We want to address the horrific problem of illegal smuggling of animals into the USA. This has become big business, and is very often tied into drug trafficking. So plan to hop into the car as we take a ride down the wild road of exotic animal importation. You will never forget this drive, I promise you!

OVERDRIVE;  This is a new section dedicated to charitable requests. This weekly section will list non-profit animal charities that are in need of funds and/or products for upcoming events. Members are encouraged to review these requests and help where they can!
If your group needs help please visit http://creativeanimalrelief.org and click on the charitable request form. Once filled out, we will review your request and place it here, on our website, on our yahoo group page, or maybe even mention it on air! (
we reserve the right to decline to advertise any event that does not meet our requirements). We want to organize all financial requests so that our members are not overwhelmed, so we have created guidelines for publication of these events. This area is dedicated to the 501c3 large events.

    • *The Carolinas Jack Russel Group will be holding their annual
fundraiser, a JRTCA sanctioned trial, on May 2 and 3 in Sumter, South
Carolina. They are expecting approximately 350 entries in the show,
and will be having a raffle fund-raiser on May 2 at the trial site.
Proceeds from the raffle will go to benefit the Carolinas Jack Russell
Rescue. Their organization helps displaced and abused dogs, and they
are in need of product donations for this raffle. Please visit them at
      http://www.cjrtc.com. for more info.

*Its Meow or Never will be holding a Paws for Cause auction in May or
June. They are hoping to raise enough money to open a new adoption
center. They are currently asking for donations of products, services,
or gift certificates to be auctioned off over the net. They will
provide donators with advertisment by placing contributor links on
their auction website. Please visit www.itsmeowornever.org for more
      details.

*Muttville, a non profit charity out of SanFranCisco, California will
be hosting a very special funraising event 6/13/09 called "Moolah for
Mutts". They are pulling out all the stops in order to fund the
rescue, veterinary care, and home placement of senior dogs. This
silent auction, live auction, raffle, wine tasting, food & beverage
event will take place in a church that has been converted into a home,
and was featured on an episode of "This Old House". It stands to be
one very memorable event! They are looking for individual or groups
that would be willing to donate $100 cash to help sponsor the event,
in turn they will be advertised as sponsors. Can't do that? They are
also in need of items for the raffle, and you can place your business
card with your item. To read more about this group and this event
please check out http://www.Muttville.org. For specific onfo on the
      fundraiser see http://www.moolahformutts.org
