It seems sometimes that to break the rules is the way to enlightenment. To go contrary to the norm is what brings the breakthrough. This may be true but what is important is to know which "rules" to break. To break cultural or man made rules that limit and bind down and oppress is reasonable. To break God's rules of decency is not.

To totally throw away our parents law's or even societies' laws without reviewing them through the law of the gospel of Jesus Christ is very dangerous indeed. Man does not have within himself the ability to make choices that are healthy on his own because he simply does not have all the information.

We are truly infantile, no matter what age we attain or what degrees or honor we may claim. It is to Christ that we must look for answers and in his laws we will find safety and peace for the self and for the world.

So discernment would need the knowledge of the gospel to give an accurate reading and even then it will only give the light so far into the future. We have been called to walk in faith and in no other way could we be proven and refined so that we know that the calling we receive on the other side (after death) is the one we truly chose or accepted for ourselves.
